Description
Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond uses written instruction and visual tools to teach students how to read, write, and research effectively for different purposes.
Lester Faigley’s clear and inviting teaching style and Dorling Kindersley’s accessible and striking design combine to give students a textbook that shows them what readers and writers actually do. Unique, dynamic presentations of reading, writing, and research processes in the text bring writing alive for students and speaks to students with many learning styles. Throughout the book, students are engaged and learning, with such notable features as “process maps” to guide students through the major writing assignments, extensive examples of student “Writers at work,” and diverse, distinctive reading selections.
Features
Lester Faigley teaches students reading, writing, and research strategies that will help them be successful in college and beyond, using a combination of concise, accessible instruction, unique visual explications, plentiful examples, and engaging assignments and readings.
Important concepts and processes are presented in concise two-page spreads allowing students to see the key points they should master at a glance.
Unique “process maps” let students see at a glance what is expected of them for each of the major writing assignments in the book. These process maps give students an overview of the whole writing process and help them to stay oriented as they discover ideas, draft, and revise their own papers.
“Writer at work” sections in Chapters 10 -17 show examples of student writers working through the writing process, from invention through revision to a final paper. Instead of just showing a finished paper, these sections let students see another student working through the whole messy, creative process of writing.
Writing “Projects” that conclude Chapters 10-17 offer a variety of assignments, ranging from essays to a field observation paper, a profile, a film review, and a position argument.
Most reading selections are designed to look like original publications (an editorial looks like a page from a newspaper, a Web article looks like a Web page, and so on), thus exposing students to a diversity of genres they will encounter in college and beyond.
“Staying on Track” boxes included throughout the book focus on common writing problems and give students concrete advice for how to avoid such problems, including both “off track” and “on track” examples that help to illustrate these problems for students.
“Write Now” boxes give brief writing assignments that are designed to help students discover ideas and explore where they lead. “Working Together” boxes give collaborative activities.
In Part 3, students are given instruction in and strategies for the research process (see Chapters 18-23). Avoiding plagiarism, evaluating sources, using library databases and the Internet as research tools are covered.
Twelve student papers, all with sources and citations, give students realistic, accurate models to learn from.
More than 300 visuals, many of them photographs taken by the author, not only make every page of the text lively and engaging, but they also serve to support the main points made in each chapter.
Chapters in Part 4 offer advice on style, grammar, punctuation, and ESL issues.
Brief Appendices offer suggestions for writing essay exams and creating portfolios.
New To This Edition
Three chapters in Part 2 are now devoted to argument — evaluation, position, and proposal arguments — and new visual models demonstrate how each kind of argument works. In Chapters 15, 16, and 17, readers will find many examples of provocative, engaging arguments composed by both professionals and students that show how writers take action about issues they care about
In Chapters 10 through 17, new full-page “Explore Current Issues” assignments ask students to examine a current topic – such as why wikiHow is popular, whether modest charitable donations make a difference, and whether video games can be smart – and then shows them how to develop ideas for writing about the topic by responding to key questions.
Nearly half of the readings in this edition are new, including more long readings and more essays of the kind written in college. Notable new selections that focus on engaging, current topics include Po Bronson’s insights on how children lie, Stephanie Coontz’s exploration of the future of marriage, and Michael Pollan’s proposal for how we can eat healthier and consume fewer calories.
Every reading in Part 2 includes new "Finding Ideas for Writing" questions that help students build on the ideas raised in each readings and apply them in their own writing.
Part 3 features new advice on how to use library databases in Chapter 19 and how to evaluate Web sources in Chapter 20.
Chapters on design, collaboration, and oral presentation are now found in the front of the book, in Part 1, integrated with chapters on reading and writing.
The most recent MLA and APA documentation guidelines are included in Chapters 24 and 25 (including new 2008 MLA guidelines) with visual examples from real sources as well as color-coded sample entries to help students organize the key elements of a citation.
