New To This Edition

• Updated Exercises and Examples. Out-of-date or overly familiar exercises in each chapter were replaced. The new exercises represent gender, ethnic, and cultural diversity to reflect the diverse experiences of all students taking this course.
• A Different Approach to Lesson Introductions. The introductions to the lessons have been made more inviting in this edition, cast into a narrative of a class learning the various strategies. The student characters in the narrative do as much teaching as the professor for a peer-to-peer connection in learning. 
• Examples from professional prose. The introductions to the lessons include several examples from professional, published prose to illustrate the structures and strategies and to convey to students that the exercises have meaning: These are the same strategies used by working authors.
