Description

For one semester courses in Art Appreciation.

This text provides students with a wonderfully written introduction to art that emphasizes critical thinking and visual literacy.

Henry M. Sayre wrote A World of Art because he saw a need for an art appreciation text that was more inclusive of women artists, ethnic minorities and art from around the globe. The author provides students with an understanding of formal elements, artistic mediums, and art history.

Features

Hallmark Features

How do you teach your students to think critically about art?

  • Chapter-end Critical Process sections require students to apply information from the chapter, and analyze specific works of art through a series of questions. This develops students' critical thinking and visual analysis skills.  p. 215; p.239

  • Works in Progress features highlight the creative process that inspired specific works of art. Works under examination include Vincent Van Gogh's Sower, Lorna Simpson's The Park, Bill Viola's The Greeting, Milton Resnick's U + Me, and Michelangelo's Libyan Sybil.  p.p. 68-69; pp.136-137.

Key Features

How do you ensure your students develop critical thinking skills?

How do you provide your students with historical context?
