Description

Women and the Economy uses the tools of contemporary economics to examine different aspects of women’s lives, from the labor market to family policy and structure. Economic theory is blended with empirical research and policy issues to explore the changes in the lives of American women in the twenty-first century.

Appropriate for students with a principles of economics or an intermediate microeconomics background, this text provides a comprehensive and engaging look at intriguing topics including the effects of rising wages for women, the economic impacts of divorce, the child quantity-quality distinction, marriage subsidies, and the childcare market.

Features

  • Economic theories are explored through the use of rich empirical studies—including statistics and evidence drawn from a variety of geographically, culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse groups—to present a fuller picture of the relationship between women and the economy.
  • Timely and provocative applications, such as the decline in marriage, the rise in non-marital childbearing, and the causes and consequences of teenage childbearing, shed light on current trends and events.
  • Coverage includes and extends beyond traditional topics—work and pay—into distinctive coverage of family issues, such as marriage, fertility, family policy, and family structure.
  • Labor supply issues and labor force participation are presented and analyzed within a labor-leisure-household production model, which is more specific to women’s lives than the labor-leisure model often applied to men’s lives. This approach emphasizes the change in labor force participation and integrates the household into the analysis.
  • Theory chapters (Chapters 3–10) have a common structure, beginning with a brief introduction, moving to basic empirical information and trends to discuss broader issues, and analyzing the data to demonstrate theoretical underpinnings.
  • Public policy chapters (Chapters 11–14) explore topics such as the gender wage gap, poverty and welfare, Social Security and taxes, family policy, and family structure. Where possible, policy issues are linked back to the theory chapters.

New To This Edition

  • A new Chapter 15 discusses women in developing countries, and provides coverage of issues such as polygyny, early and arranged marriages, and child labor. It also includes analysis of the impact of economic development, such as job opportunities and the availability of micro-financing, on their overall economic well being.
  • A newly streamlined and revised analysis of the economics of fertility is included in Chapter 5.
  • New sections on the latest research topics such as occupation segregation, earnings differences, poverty and welfare, and the marriage tax are added to chapter discussions where appropriate.
  • Coverage of family policy and family structure (Chapters 14 and 15 of the previous edition) are streamlined into a single chapter.
  • Additional topic boxes cover recent research such as the role of gender preference in divorce and fertility, and detailed studies are added on the Companion Website for timely discussion in class.
  • New! Quantitative and conceptual questions are added to the end-of-chapter material.
  • New! References are added to the end-of-chapter material for additional reading.
