Description

For methods, content, or combined courses in Mathematics for Early Childhood.

Believing that teachers who are comfortable with mathematics develop learners who are comfortable with mathematics, this author empowers preservice preK-4 teachers to teach math confidently by laying a solid foundation of math concepts, and building on that foundation with engaging, meaningful, standards-based teaching methods. Integrated in this unique combined approach to teaching mathematics is a thorough discussion of math manipulatives, as well as the use of technology–computer and otherwise–to assist today's mathematics teacher. Teaching strategies are grounded in the NCTM standards and illustrated with real student work. In addition, the author provides a full range of concrete developmental activities that encourage future teachers to make math make sense for themselves as well as for their students.

Features

  • Unique chapter structure–One that first builds an understanding of math concepts as a foundation for the teaching methods subsequently addressed.
    • Encourages future teachers to become secure in their own understanding of the math they will teach–gives them a solid knowledge base that allows them to "teach from their excess."

  • Incorporation of the latest NCTM standards throughout the material.
    • Ensures students leave the course understanding the most current standards in the field–prepares them for the expectations of parents, principals, school boards, and communities.

  • Activities throughout each chapter–Complete with numerous handouts that are ideal for future classrooms.
    • Model for students the kind of classroom teaching the text advocates–stressing the need for involved and interesting teaching that engages young children's eager minds.

  • Problem sets after each major text sectionFor Your Understanding and Applications in the Classroom.
    • Serve a two-fold purpose–For Your Understanding sets allow readers to easily gauge their own content understanding, while Applications in the Classroom sets provide age-appropriate, ready-to-use ideas for K-4 classes.

  • Math Manipulatives features throughout the text–Complete with teacher instruction information and tools/activities for K-4 classrooms.
    • Introduce future teachers to the use of manipulatives–helps them understand when, why, and how to enlist these aids to provide concrete learning experiences.

  • Using Literature in the Mathematics Classroom features throughout the text–Tie chapter content to both contemporary and classic titles and include specific strategies for using each.
    • Highlight ways to teach mathematics through the use of the stories children love–particularly useful for teaching interdisciplinary lessons and units.
