Description

U.S. and Latin American Relations offers in-depth theoretical and historical analysis to comprehensively examine the complex dynamic between the countries of Latin America and their northern neighbor.

Surveying the history of these relations from the 19th century to the present, this text highlights how attitudes and policy approaches have changed in the United States and Latin America and then discusses issues of current importance within this historical context. Throughout, international relations theories are applied to examine regional relations from a broader global perspective. Written for students of Latin American politics and American foreign policy, the unique combination of theory and history explores the background of and future for relations between Latin America and the United States.

Features

  • Chapter 1 presents a theoretical framework to helps students view U.S.-Latin American relations regionally and globally and to identify the underlying forces in these relations.
  • Part I reviews the history of U.S.-Latin American relations from the 19th century to the present and includes a chapter dedicated to Cuba to shed light on contemporary political developments.
  • Part II examines four issues–debt and trade, immigration, human rights and democracy, and drugs and terrorism–to illustrate how the United States and Latin America come into conflict and into cooperation.
  • Each chapter begins with a timeline and incorporates two to three primary documents to place issues within a historical context.
  • The end-of-chapter list of readings, websites, and suggested research questions and end-of-text bibliography and glossary provide springboards for further learning and research.
