Description

Thoroughly revised and updated to be relevant, approachable, and appealing, Total Fitness & Wellness gives students a solid foundation in fitness and lifetime wellness, while teaching them how to make healthy behavioral changes and lifestyle choices. The new edition combines the latest research in exercise science, expanded coverage of behavior change, and exciting new features with the most comprehensive supplements package in the market to make a book instructors and students alike will enjoy using. For a focused presentation on fitness, the Brief edition consists of Chapters 1-10 and 16 from the big book so students receive the basics on fitness, nutrition, cardiovascular disease and stress management.

Scott Powers and Stephen Dodd are award-winning instructors who bring their expertise in exercise physiology to the text. In addition, new authors Erica Jackson and Marilyn Miller bring their expertise in teaching fitness and wellness to this edition of the text. The authors address important issues such as behavior change, nutrition, cardiovascular health, disease prevention, exercise-related injuries, exercise and the environment, and stress management. Updated coverage in the Fifth Edition includes a new chapter on body composition, the reorganization of content to more fully integrate behavior change, and a revised lab program reflecting current fitness trends. An expanded media package features a Teaching Tool Box that includes a Course-at-a-Glance Quick Reference Guide, and the Fitness Support Manual. ABC News Lecture Launcher videos are incorporated into the PowerPoint® Lecture Slide presentations, and new and revised labs plus exercise videos have been added to MyHealthLab.

Features

  • Lab exercises allow students to apply textual information to practical issues, encouraging the immediate development of healthy lifestyle choices and a core fitness plan.
  • A Closer Look boxes give the reader insight into special topics such as the effects of caffeine, the search for a cure for AIDS, road rage, muscle cramps, and anabolic steroid use.
  • Consumer Corner boxes teach students to be informed and discerning health and fitness consumers, guiding them to make the best fitness and wellness decisions in a market full of fads, gimmicks, and gadgets.
  • Appreciating Diversity boxes present current health research, covering issues such as how the risk of cancer varies across the U.S. and how the incidence of drug abuse varies across populations.
  • End of chapter material includes Chapter Summaries, Study Questions, Suggested Readings, Web Links, and updated References.
  • The Behavior Change Log Book and Wellness Journal encourages behavior change by providing students with hands-on material to track daily exercise and food intake and to create personal, long-term fitness and nutrition programs. New journal activities and an updated Nutritional Content of Common Foods table have also been added.
  • Updated coverage throughout the text including references to new research and the additional coverage of current topics of student interest such as eating disorders, stress-management strategies, Pilates, diabetes and prediabetes, ergogenic dietary supplements, at-home fitness equipment, antioxidants, and emotional health.

New To This Edition

  • New thought-provoking Chapter-opening quizzes address common fitness myths and misceptions. A fresh new design throughout makes the text more accessible, engaging, and visually appealing than ever before.
  • A New Steps for Behavior Change feature focuses students on evaluating their own behaviors (e.g., Are you a fast food junkie? Are you reluctant to strength train? Do you protect your skin from UV light?) and presents them with practical steps they can take to make meaningful behavior change.
  • New Consider This! features grab students’ attention with surprising statistics, prompting them to pause and consider the long-term consequences of specific health behaviors.
  • A new chapter on Body Composition (Chapter 6) has been added to emphasize the importance of body composition as one of the five major components of physical fitness.
  •  Behavior change material has been moved up from Chapter 10 to Chapter 1, to reflect the standard organization of the course.
  • Integration of fitness assessment material throughout the book aligns the assessments with the topics they are relevant to.
  • New and revised labs reflect current trends in fitness and incorporate activities that students can do at home, outdoors, and with more economical materials. New labs cover topics such as assessing tobacco usage, selecting a health insurance plan, and measuring core strength and stability.
  • Updated exercise photos serve as a valuable reference for students who often take their book with them to the fitness center, and use it when completing a lab.
  • Exercise videos feature demonstrations of strength training and flexibility exercises, with a focus on safety and adaptive techniques for at-home workouts.  The videos feature resistance bands, "physio"-balls, and free weights, allowing users a wide variety of exercises to choose from based on their individual preferences and access to equipment.  These videos are available on the Media  Manager and MyHealthLab.
  • Two new co-authors, Erica Jackson, Ph.D., and Marilyn Miller, Ph.D., bring expertise and first-hand knowledge of the current challenges fitness and wellness instructors face in the classroom.
  •  An expanded media package includes the Teaching Tool Box, new fitness videos, and MyHealthLab, an online course management system that includes an interactive e-book, an electronic version of the Behavior Change Log Book and Wellness Journal, new exercise videos showing students proper techniques for both muscular strength and flexibility exercises, ABC News Health Lecture Launcher video clips, and new activities, self-assessments, and quizzes. The Companion Website has been updated and revised to enhance student learning.
  • The Teaching Tool Box contains all the instructor supplements (Test Bank, Computerized Test Bank, Transparency Acetates) and valuable student supplements items (LiveRight!, Eat Right!,  Behavior Change Log Book, Take Charge! Self-Assessment Worksheets), in one convenient box plus additional tools to make prep and lecture a snap, the Media Manager, Course-at-a-Glance Quick Reference Guide, and the Fitness Support Manual.
