Description

This attractive, accessible four color text provides comprehensive coverage of Texas politics and government, utilizing a historical perspective.

The book, written by a best-selling author team, is a spin-off of the popular Texas chapters in the O’Connor/Sabato/Haag/Keith, American Government: Continuity and Change, Texas Edition. The second edition of this four-color book examines the unique character of Texas politics and government and traces how it has changed or remained constant over its history.  The authors argue that in order to understand Texas politics and government today, we must understand how they have evolved over time.  In addition, the authors provide a plethora of boxed features designed to engage students in debates over key political issues, in critical thinking, and in the current and historical political climate of their state.

Features

Hallmark features of Texas Politics and Government:

  • “Roots of” and “Toward Reform” sections have been added to the beginning and conclusion of each chapter, highlighting the importance of the history of Texas politics and government, as well as the dynamic cycle of reassessment and reform that allows Texas to continue to evolve.  Each “Roots of” section gives a historical overview of the topic at hand, and each “Toward Reform” section is devoted to a particularly contentious, current aspect of Texas politics.
  • ‘What Should I Know About” sections begin each chapter with a series of questions tied to major chapter headings and focus your reading on the most important concepts and points.  New “What Have I Learned” sections now close each chapter, briefly summarizing the answers to those questions.
  • “Thinking Nationally” features highlight Texas’s differences from and commonalities with other states in the U.S.  Examples of this feature include a comparison of legislative and gubernatorial budget preparations in New York and Texas (in Chapter 4) and a comparison of the length of state constitutions (in Chapter 2).
  • “Ideas into Action” features discuss practical ways for college students to become more involved in their government and communities.  Some of the features focus on initiatives on Texas campuses; others relate to state and national-level issues.  For example, Chapter 2 discusses the role that Angelo State University students played in a legislative attempt to revise the Texas Constitution.
  • New Timelines appear in selected chapters and provide students with a clear understanding of — and visual study aid for — the development of key topics in Texas politics.  For example, Chapter 3 includes a timeline devoted to voting requirements in Texas.
  • Updated “Politics Now” boxes highlight reform through a focus on recent events.  News articles about current political personalities or political developments are paired with critical thinking questions to allow students to learn more about the most recent state of Texas politics.  For example, Chapter 4’s “Politics Now” box focuses on the controversy over “ghost workers” employed by members of the Texas legislature.

New To This Edition

New features of Texas Politics and Government:

  • This latest edition includes new “Ideas into Action” sections highlighting student protests on immigration policy and grassroots engagement in amending the Texas Constitution.
  • A new “Analyzing Visuals” feature looks at the Texas population projections for 2010 to 2040
  • The “Politics Now” features have been updated to cover current topics affecting Texas politics, including the state’s health insurance crisis.
  • This new edition addresses the controversial issue of erecting fences along the Texas/Mexico border and its impact on city-state relations.
  • Campaign gifts and political ties are examined in a new “Politics Now” feature on Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick’s political donations.
  • A new timeline of voting requirements in Texas highlights the major changes in Texas political participation.
