Description

By leading with practical data analysis and graphics, Stats: Modeling the World, Third Edition, engages students and gets them to do statistics and think statistically from the start. With the authors’ signature Think, Show, Tell problem-solving method, students learn what we can find in data, why we find it interesting and how to report it to others. Instructors praise this text as clear and accessible, while students report that they actually enjoy reading the book while learning how to do statistics. Additional examples with updated data make this new edition even easier to read and use.

Datasets and other resources (where applicable) for this book are available here.

Features

  • Just Checking exercises within each chapter allow students to pause and confirm their understanding of key concepts before moving on. These questions provide a quick check and most involve very little calculation. The answers are the end of each chapter so students can easily check their work.
  • New exercises have been added throughout the book, and they have been graded by level of difficulty to give students additional practice with basic skills before applying them to more complicated problems. Exercises continue to be paired so that for every odd number, there is a similar even number, which gives students more comprehensive practice and teachers greater flexibility when assigning homework.
  • What Have We Learned? sections at the end of each chapter highlight new concepts, define the new terms introduced in the chapter, and list the skills that the student should have acquired. This practical study guide ensures that students are fully prepared for exams.
  • ActivStats Pointers highlight concept videos, teaching applets, and animations in ActivStats that enhance the discussions in the book. ActivStats with Data Desk statistical software is included with every new copy of the text. ActivStats for JMP®, Excel®, Minitab®, and SPSS® is also available for bundling with this textbook.
  • A motivating example starts off each chapter, teaching students how to Think about the statistical issues at hand, Show proper application of statistical techniques, and Tell others what they have learned. This “Think, Show, Tell” approach to problem solving is repeated throughout the book.
  • Math Boxes give students easy-to-follow discussions of the underlying mathematics behind statistics. While the authors don’t bury students in proofs and derivations, they do show that the formulas and procedures that they use stand on solid ground.
  • What Can Go Wrong? sections in each chapter illustrate the most common misuses and misconceptions of statistical thinking to arm students with the ability to detect statistical errors and offer practice in debunking misuses of statistics.
  • The book is organized into short, teachable chapters. Each chapter covers roughly the material for one or two classes (depending on class schedule and length).
  • Easy-to-read TI Tips show students how to use the calculator’s statistics functions as they are needed.
  • By Hand boxes appear occasionally throughout the text to show students how to do a calculation by hand.
  • Reality Checks ask students to check that their results make sense in the context of the problem before interpreting the results, reminding them that Statistics is about understanding the world with data.
  • Notation Alerts emphasize the importance of clear communication while demonstrating that proper notation is part of the vocabulary of Statistics.
  • End-of-chapter features test students’ understanding of the material and help them prepare for exams:
    • A review of Key Concepts and essential Skills helps students check their own understanding, and Connections sections tie current material to concepts covered in previous chapters.
    • on the Computer sections give generic output and instruction for several of the most common statistical software packages including: Data Desk®, Excel®, SPSS®, JMP® MINITAB®, and the TI-83/84 Plus graphing calculator.

New To This Edition

  • More than 100 new illustrative examples demonstrate how to apply new concepts and methods. Rather than isolated examples, each "For Example" picks up the story and advances the exposition.
  • ActivStats pointers have been revised for clarity and now indicate exactly what they are pointing to–activity, video, simulation, animation–thus paralleling the book's discussions to enhance learning.
  • TI-Nspire® demonstrations and investigations enhance each chapter with this new technology.
  • Hundreds of new exercises include more single-concept exercises at the beginning of each set, allowing students to be sure that they have a clear understanding of each important topic before synthesizing them in more difficult problems. Whenever possible, the data are included on the companion DVD-ROM and the book's website so that students can explore them further.
  • Chapters 4 and 5 have been entirely rewritten and reorganized, providing a fresh and exciting way to present certain fundamental topics. Chapter 4 discusses displays and summaries for quantitative data; Chapter 5 expands on those ideas to discuss comparisons across groups, outliers, and other more sophisticated topics.
  • Chapter 11 includes a clearer discussion of simulation to better connect it with discussions of experimental design and probability. The simulations included in the ActivStats multimedia software on the included DVD-ROM offer students interactive applets with which to explore this topic.
  • Teacher's Podcasts (10 points in 10 minutes) summarize the key points of every chapter and offer teaching tips and extra examples to use in class. Instructors can listen on their iPods or on their computers before class. These are available on the Adjunct and Instructor Support site, found at www.aw-bc.com/dvb_support, or within MyStatLab.
  • Video Lectures for each chapter of the text show the authors delivering a 7-10 minute review of the important points of the chapter. Instructors then show students how to solve statistics problems by carefully working through an example from the text using the authors' hallmark Think/Show/Tell problem-solving method.

Author Bios

David Bock (Cornell University) has won awards as a high school teacher of AP calculus and statistics and was a grader for the AP Statistics program from its inception. He now is the chief extension officer for the Cornell University mathematics department in charge of outreach to K-12 teachers. Dave’s wisdom about how students learn helps shape the book’s pedagogy.

Paul Velleman (Cornell University) is the only statistician to win the EDUCAUSE award for innovating technology for learning. The developer of ActivStats® multimedia software, Data Desk statistics software, and the DASL online archive of teaching datasets, his understanding of using and teaching with technology informs much of the book’s approach.

Richard D. De Veaux (Williams College) is an award-winning teacher and consultant to major corporations. Dick has taught business students at Wharton, engineering students at Princeton, and liberal arts students at Williams. His real-world experiences and anecdotes illustrate many of this book’s chapters.
