Description

For one semester/quarter courses in Introductory Sociology.

The most student friendly text for the introductory sociology course offers more value to the student, provides learning styles strategies for more effective learning, and has a built-in study guide to help students focus their study time.

Features

Established Features of Sociology for the Twenty-First Century:

  • A comparison of the three major theoretical perspectives introduces the viewpoints of functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction in Part One of the text. In Parts Two and Three, these perspectives are systematically applied to each chapter. Discussions are reinforced with tables comparing the three major theoretical perspectives.
  • Social change is emphasized as a fundamental aspect of society, especially the shift from societies organized around personal relationships to those organized around impersonal relationships. This change is referred to as the Great Social Transformation. Beginning with Chapter 4, each chapter contains a section applying the concept of the Great Social Transformation to the subject matter under discussion.
  • What Do You Think? boxesand Critical Thinking Questions (indicated by CQ icon) reinforce and challenge students' understanding of topics under discussion and helps them to develop their sociological imagination. This focus on critical thinking encourages students to ask questions about issues facing society.
  • Each major section of each chapter ends with a Pausing to Think segment which presents a mini-summary of the section and a critical question for students to consider.
  • A built in Study Guide is found at the end of each chapter. Each study guide includes end of chapter summaries, key term matching exercises, and multiple choice and true-false questions. This enables students to immediately test their comprehension of material before moving on to the next chapter.
  • An in-text Learning Styles Inventory located just after the prefacehelps students explore how they learn and how to use learning strategies for more effective study.

o        Verbal/Linguistic learners that use words to retain material and rely on comprehensive note taking.

o        Logical/Mathematical learners that require a very structured, organized and logical presentation of material.

o        Visual/Spatial learners that retain best when material is presented in a graphic or visual format.

o        Interpersonal material is retained best when learned and reviewed actively with others.

  • Study tips are located in the margins of the chapters and identified with an icon to provide students with ways to study for each different learning style.  The number of study tips has been doubled in this edition.
  • Complete set of instructor and student supplements: Including Instructors Resource and Testing Manual, ABC News videos for
    • Introductory Sociology, Faculty Resources on CD, OneKey and SocNotes.
