Description

From the author of the highly successful paragraph to essay level text, Resources for Writers with Readings, 2/e, comes the companion text for the sentence to paragraph level course, Sentence Resources for Writers, with Readings, a textbook designed to fully meet the needs of the developing college writer and the developmental writing educator.

All the resources students need to succeed in this course, and all the resources instructors need to successfully teach this course (without supplementing) are available exclusively in this one book. The integration of comprehensive skill instruction, a wealth of exercises, and a lab manual make Sentence Resources for Writers the most complete resource for developmental writing at the sentence to paragraph level.

Sentence Resources for Writers gives clear and accessible writing instruction using appealing examples from cultural literacy.   Each chapter uses a different cultural literacy topic drawing from light-hearted topics to serious ones.   The "Four Cs" approach to writing is used consistently to reinforce corresponding skills and lead students through the process of writing effective sentences, and an abundance ofl exercises gives students effective reinforcement. Examples are drawn from a wide variety of sources–novels, newspapers,   magazines–and provide high student interest.   Chapters are modular giving instructors maximum flexibility. An appealing four-color design showcases the photos included and adds visual interest to each page. The text's Lab Manual consists of workbook activities for each text chapter that are supplemented by additional, correlated activities in the Online Lab Manual.

Features

  • Clear, highly accessible instruction. The text's contemporary, upbeat language will appeal to today's students. The tone is never condescending or stuffy.
  • Cultural literacy theme. Each chapter is introduced by a short “Culture Note” on topics ranging from the lighthearted (doughnuts as an American snack) to the serious (the causes of the Civil War), and across the academic spectrum (Greek mythology, prominent scientists, Freud, Shakespeare). The theme is carried throughout the chapter in illustrations, sample paragraphs, and exercises.
  • High visual interest. More than 60 color photos and 30 diagrams elucidate cultural themes and pedagogical concepts and invite students to respond in writing.
  • Four Cs approach to skills. The mnemonic device–concise, credible, clear, correct–is used consistently to reinforce corresponding skills and lead the student through the writing process steps.
  • Diagnostics. Students can take a grammar diagnostic, and a punctuation and mechanics diagnostic to determine their level of skill before proceeding to specific grammar and punctuation chapters.
  • Peer evaluation and self-analysis emphasis. Students are encouraged to monitor their own progress through goal sheets and to work cooperatively with their peers using a peer editing worksheet.
  • Stimulating readings. The 18 readings cover themes of interest to contemporary students-ethics, poverty, grades, habits, and so on. Each reading is accompanied by exercises that help readers digest the material and respond in writing.
  • Lab Manual. Each chapter is supplemented by a two-page, consumable activity in the text Lab Manual.   Additional activities that correspond to and enhance the text activity appear on the Lab Manual Online.
  • MyWritingLab: Where better practice makes better writers! MyWritingLab, a complete online learning program, provides better practice exercises for developing writers, and with better practice, your students will become better writers!
    • Progressive Learning: The heart of MyWritingLab is the progressive learning in the Recall, Apply and Write exercises within each module. In the 9,000 exercises system wide, students move from literal comprehension (Recall) to applying comprehension (Apply) to demonstrating concepts in their own writing (Write). This proven progression of critical thinking, not available in any other online resource, enables students to truly master the skills and concepts they need to be successful writers.
    • A Text-Correlated Learning Path: Based on their text in use, students are automatically provided with a customized learning path that complements their textbook’s table of contents and extends textbook learning.
    • Progress Tracker: All student work in MyWritingLab is captured in the site’s Progress Tracker.  Students can track their own progress and instructors can track the progress of their entire class in this flexible and easy-to-use tool.
    • Diagnostic Testing: MyWritingLab’s diagnostic test comprehensively assesses student skills in grammar.  Students are given an individualized learning path based on the diagnostic’s results, identifying the modules in areas where they most need help.
    • Additional resources for students in MyWritingLab include access to an interactive Study Skills website, access to Research Navigator, and a complimentary subscription to our English Tutor Center, which is staffed by live, college instructors.
