Description

The QRI-4 has long led the field in offering students and teachers alike a reliable and easy-to-use informal assessment instrument. This Fourth Edition continues to emphasize authentic assessment of children’s reading abilities, from the most emergent readers to advanced readers.

One of the keys to the success of the QRI-4 is that it contains narrative and expository passages at each pre-primer through high school level. All are self-contained selections highly representative of the structure and topic of materials found in basal readers and content-area textbooks. At the same time, it provides graded word lists and numerous passages designed to assess the oral reading, silent reading, or listening comprehension of a student as well as questions to assess prior knowledge. Instructors can measure comprehension by retelling passages, implicit and explicit questions, and other devices.

Although the QRI4 remains an informal assessment instrument, highly respected scholars and researchers Lauren Leslie and JoAnne Caldwell conducted an extensive piloting of the test with approximately 1000 students and have also included a technical manual (Section 16) that addresses alternate-form reliability, inter-scorer reliability, reliability of diagnostic judgments, concurrent validity, construct validity and classification validity. Thus, based on the latest reading research and in-line with No Child Left Behind Reading First components, this comprehensive inventory is widely used at the school district level for its focus on assessment of specific questions regarding word identification, fluency, and comprehension. In addition, it also provides suggestions for intervention instruction, procedures for assessment of strategic reading, and inclusion of results in classroom portfolios.

Features

  • Clear examples of how to use QRI in reading interventions, and in testing to demonstrate student growth.
  • Diagnostic options are illustrated to help teachers assess students' reading levels.
  • "Look-Backs" test students on questions they've missed by allowing them to re-read particular passages, and help teachers distinguish between comprehension during reading and memory problems.
  • "Think-Alouds" ask readers to describe what they're thinking at a particular section of text, providing teachers with insight on the comprehension process.
  • High school passages representing typical text found in literature, social studies, and science high school texts is included so teachers can now access struggling readers at the secondary level.
  • Easily reproducible large, spiral-bound format makes ready-to-use pages easy to reproduce.

New To This Edition

Praised by students and teachers alike as the most reliable and easy-to-use informal assessment instrument on the market!

The Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 continues to emphasize authentic assessment of children’s reading abilities, from the most emergent readers to advanced readers. With expanded coverage of critical areas of assessment, the QRI-4 is a valid research-based measure of reading improvement. Highly respected scholars and researchers Lauren Leslie and JoAnne Caldwell have incorporated the latest reading research, in line with No Child Left Behind Reading First components.

This comprehensive inventory is widely used for its focus on assessment of specific questions regarding word identification, fluency, and comprehension. In addition, it provides suggestions for intervention instruction, procedures for assessment of strategic reading, and inclusion of results in classroom portfolios.

The QRI-4 Continues to Garner Praise:

“The passages have been carefully designed to reflect the material in basal readers and expository texts used in schools. Therefore, the information derived from the QRI will be immediately useful for classroom teachers and reading specialists. There is a valid and reliable connection between the results obtained from the QRI and individualized instruction.”
Peggy Snowden, SUNY — Plattsburgh

“Strengths of the [QRI] include its strong research base, constructed as it were by reading scientists, its history of revision to reflect the growing knowledge base in reading, and its versatility in investigating reading behavior; these aspects distinguish the QRI from its IRI competitors.”
Bruce Murray, Auburn University
