Description

With a focus on the constant interactions of events, this text helps students understand the foundations of the discipline from the vantage points of the brain, the person, and the world (group).

Through their own research, clinical work, and experiences as teachers, Stephen Kosslyn and Robin Rosenberg have found that exploring psychology from three integrated perspectives further enhances learning. Examining psychological concepts from the interactions of the brain (biological factors), the person (beliefs, desires, and feelings) and the world (social, cultural, and environmental factors) helps students organize and integrate topics within and across chapters and actively apply psychology to their lives.

The third edition continues to provide the most comprehensive yet accessible coverage of neuroscience for the introductory psychology student.  The neuroscience is placed solidly in a psychological context; facts about the brain are not described for their own sake, but rather to show how such facts illuminate psychology.  The third edition also features pedagogical enhancements such as “chunking” the material into smaller units to help students more readily learn and retain information.  Each chapter also closes with a “Review and Remember!” note-taking exercise that encourages students to jot down their own thoughts and memory devices alongside the author-provided summary.

Features

  • Integrates the field and brings psychology into focus for students by examining concepts as they pertain to the brain, the person, and the world. In the third edition, the popular “Looking at Levels” feature has been modified to explore one topic per chapter in depth.
  • Features well-known and highly regarded authors: Stephen Kosslyn is professor of psychology at Harvard University where he is currently department chair and “head tutor,” supervising graduate students who teach the introductory psychology course. Dr. Kosslyn's research has focused on the nature of visual mental imagery and visual communication. Robin Rosenberg is a clinical psychologist in private practice and has taught introductory psychology at Lesley College and Harvard University.
  • Includes a high-interest chapter story that begins each chapter and is revisited throughout, providing a framework for the chapter's discussion of relevant psychological theories and research. These stories allow students to see how the psychological material covered in the chapter might apply to people outside of a psychological laboratory and they also make the material more interesting and applicable to their lives, thus facilitating learning and remembering. The third edition has two new chapter-opening stories in Chapter 9 (J.K. Rowling) and Chapter 10 (Ghandi).
  • Features a sophisticated yet accessible presentation, including built-in study aids such as “Test Yourself!” and “Think it Through!” interim review questions, “Review and Remember!” chapter summaries and note-taking guides, and lists of key terms.  All of these are designed to help students focus in on the core concepts.

New To This Edition

  • Each chapter contains much new research and cutting-edge coverage, all accessibly presented with engaging real-world examples that make the material relevant and interesting to students.  In addition, the third edition features many new pedagogical tools:
    • One in-depth “Looking at Levels” feature per chapter, rather than several smaller features that don’t allow for full coverage of each level of analysis (the brain, the person, the world)
    • Two new chapter-opening stories: Chapter 9 now traces the life of J.K. Rowling, the creative mind behind the wizard Harry Potter, and Chapter 10 follows Ghandi on his long journey to peaceful activism and social justice
    • “Think it Through!” interim review questions now appear within the chapter rather than in the chapter summaries
    • Each Understanding Research feature is now followed by a “Think Critically” question set
    • The chapter-closing material has been changed to a “Review and Remember!” format that includes both a summary of the chapter material and a place where students can take their own notes for easier studying
    • Fully revised, high-quality art program throughout

Table of Contents
