Description

For undergraduate/graduate courses in Behavior Modification, Behavior Therapy, and Behavior Management.

This text offers a solid introduction to the principles of behavior using a clear, interesting, entertaining style with many case studies and everyday examples while maintaining a high level of intellectual rigor and addressing fundamental concepts.

Since writing the first edition of Principles of Behavior the authors have sought to address a unique need of the students in their behavior modification classes: levels of student ability, experience, and exposure to the topics addressed in these courses often varied greatly. From freshman undergradute courses straight through graduate level research, there was a need for a text that was flexible yet rigorous enough to appeal to both the novice and advanced student. Here, the authors have been able to do just that. Princibles of Behavior offers a solid introduction to the principles of behavior using a clear, interesting, entertaining style with many case studies and everyday examples while maintaining a high level of intellectual rigor and addressing fundamental concepts.

Features

How do you get your students engaged with their text?

  • A flexible introduction—To behavior theory and analysis, presents each chapter in two sections: Fundamentals provides the bare-bones essence of the chapter content; Enrichment contains Basic and Intermediate writing levels.
    • Enables all graduate and undergraduate students (some who are continuing their study of behavioral analysis and some who are not) to comprehend and use this information.

  • Hypothetical Skinner box examples—Uses rat or pigeons to illustrate many basic behavior contingencies and procedures.
    • Supplies students with an excellent tool for understanding the complexity of the life of the human being in the normal environment. Offers instructors the choice of covering these sections or not.

  • Compare and contrast sections—Presented where necessary on topics such as: escape vs. punishment; reinforcer vs. reinforcement; time out vs. response cost; penalty vs. extinction; and differential reinforcement vs. reinforcement.
    • Helps students understand the differences between important concepts.

  • Engaging, friendly writing style—Introduces a) fictional characters, and b) professional behavior analysts by their formal titles and last names, and then refers to them by their first names.
    • Allows authors to present fairly sophisticated information in a way that encourages students to read, demonstrates the humanness of behavior analysts, and reinforces to students that these are professions to which they can aspire.

  • Numerous pedagogical devices—i.e., study objectives; “How to Use Study Questions“ sections; and multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.
    • Gives students an opportunity to check their comprehension of the material before moving on to the next section.

  • Revised and improved content throughout—Based on a continuous quality-improvement evaluation process.

    • Presents students with sixteen new sections throughout the text that help to make the subject of behavioral analysis relevant, exciting, interesting, and fun—with practical applications for the rest of their lives.

How do you introduce the topic of research methods in your classes?

  • Versatile presentation of research methods—Introduced either in context in the various Enrichment sections, or in a separate chapter.
    • Provides maximum flexibility to both those instructors who devote a specific lecture to research methods AND to those who choose to present methodology as the contextual opportunities arise.
