Description

Highly regarded for its comprehensive coverage, up-to-date scholarship, and comparative framework, Politics in Russia is an authoritative overview of Russia’s contemporary political system and its recent evolution.

Leading area specialist Thomas Remington focuses on four areas of change—state structure, regime change, economic transformation, and identity—to offer a context for analyzing the transition from the Soviet to the post-Soviet era. Consistently emphasizing the intersection of politics and economics and the tension between authoritarian and democratic trends, this text helps students explore the complexities and ambiguities of Russian politics today.

Features

  • Employs a comparative framework to highlight how Russia is like and unlike other transitional countries.
  • Surveys Russia’s contemporary political institutions and processes from a developmental perspective, analyzing how the former Soviet system has influenced the evolution of the current one.
  • Details the evolution from a centralized economy to a market economy and examines how this affects Russia’s international relations.
  • Discusses individual Russians–leaders and citizens–and how they experience and manage political and economic changes.
  • “Close-Up” sections focus on key concepts and events to add depth and context to the issues discussed in each chapter.

New To This Edition

  • Analyzes the strengthening of state power by President Putin and its compatibility with economic growth.
  • Discussion of oil and gas production and its importance to Russia’s economy and politics compares Russia with other major oil-exporting countries.
  • Expanded coverage on the development of Russia’s civil society discusses emerging authoritarian trends in the state’s relations with non-governmental organizations.
