Features

For Undergraduate or Graduate courses in Personal Finance or Professional Financial Planning

Personal Finance: An Integrated Planning Approach prepares students to meet the challenges of a changing economy by focusing on the two most important personal financial skills: planning and a basic understanding of planning techniques; and the ability to think critically and to make effective decisions.

Decision-Making Approach:
The analysis employs a four-part approach to decision making that involves setting goals, listing alternatives, measuring performance, and evaluating achievement. Important in this process are the concepts of opportunity costs and marginal analysis. These topics are introduced and explained in Chapter 1 and are used extensively throughout the text.

An Emphasis on Risk and Return: At the core of financial decision making is the balancing of risk and return. This concept applies in particular to investments, but it’s also useful in decisions that involve uncertainty; thus, there is an expanded discussion of risk management in the insurance section. In the investment section, we treat risk in such a way that students can use the concept when making investments.

UPDATED. An Illustrative Family:
The decision-making approach is highlighted by the Steeles, a typical American family readers will follow throughout the book, as they deal with problems and make decisions. In the new edition, the Steeles’ financials have been updated to better reflect today’s cost of living and current tax laws.

A Goal Planning Exercise: As a single mother with a four-year old son is trying to get ahead financially on a limited income, students have an opportunity to participate in the planning of this difficult situation.

A Complete Complement of End-of-Chapter Learning Aids including:
•    Follow-Up on the Steeles:  Thought provoking questions designed to stimulate students to think about solutions to specific financial planning problems.
•    Problems and Review Questions: A list of questions meant to provide the basis for a review of textual material and to stimulate thought and discussion on the chapter’s content. The questions and problems have been updated to reflect changes in the financial environment.
•    Cases in Personal Finance: When completed, two case studies provide additional insight into the topics covered. These study aids are more challenging than the problems and review questions, and require a firm grasp of the fundamentals and more computation. In this edition all cases have been revised to reflect changes in the financial environment.
•    Working Out on the Web Exercises designed to show students how the Internet can be used as a financial planning tool. The exercises are linked to informational sources on the Internet.

New to This Edition:

New themed boxes have been included covering current topics such as the sub-prime crisis, retirement allocation funds, and payday loans.
