This engaging reader provides brief, readable selections organized by both rhetorical pattern and theme.

 

Featuring seventy-two brief selections, this accessible compilation features a dual organization with readings that illustrate a specific rhetorical pattern while exploring the chapter’s theme. Selections range from professional essays to annotated student essays, short stories, and poems.  The text also includes full-color fine art as well as advertisements and photographs. Each chapter is enriched by an introduction that provides specific guidelines for understanding the rhetorical pattern illustrated and a detailed checklist for writing in that rhetorical mode.  Selections are followed by vocabulary work, detailed questions for reading and analysis, and topics for writing.


Features

  • Dual rhetorical and thematic organization gives instructors the option of stressing pattern or theme and allows them to compare and contrast the selections for both content and rhetorical structure.
  • Reading selections are brief, accessible and represent a variety of genres, while chapter themes start with the individual and move to larger societal, political, and moral issues.
  • Extensive apparatus includes critical thinking questions following each selection that stress the process of reading as both understanding content and drawing inferences about that content, and chapter introductions that provide detailed guidelines for writing each rhetorical pattern.  Two pre-reading questions for each reading prepare students to read more critically and to connect the reading to their own experiences.
  •  “Writing Focus” sections in each chapter offer guidance on key writing issues, i.e. writing summaries, using punctuation, and varying sentences for effect.
  •  “Making Connections” assignments at the end of each chapter ask students to explore links between the selections and information on the Web, in addition to the connections between readings in the text.
  • Images throughout, some within essays, provide opportunities for students to use visual media as a springboard to writing.


New To This Edition

  • Detailed checklists for writing help students prepare essays in each of the rhetorical strategies.
  • Guidelines for communicating with peers and instructors, both in person and online, have been added to Chapter 1.
  • Opportunities for gathering material online are marked by icons in the activities and Making Connections sections, designed to enrich both reading and class discussions.
  • Readings are now preceded by two questions:  a reading prompt, and a guide to individual reflection on the selection’s topic.
  • Twenty new readings have been added to the text, along with new art and a new student essay (Ch. 5), to make a total of 6 student responses to professional essays.
