In this section:
Mosaicos’ common-sense, communicative approach addresses the realities of the Elementary Spanish classroom—where students come to class with questions about grammar or feel anxious about communicating in a second language—by presenting grammar as well as vocabulary in a communicative context within the main body of each chapter and by offering carefully sequenced sets of activities that build student confidence and provide abundant opportunities for communicative practice. Strategies as well as practice opportunities are provided for listening, speaking, reading and writing, and cultural understanding is developed along with those communication skills. A flexible set of supplemental materials including electronic versions of the Workbook and Lab Manual, a Student Video CD-ROM and Student Audio CD, allow students to learn and practice on their own, outside of class. Media, including Entrevistas, a new video featuring interviews with native speakers of Spanish and Notas, a new text feature that includes songs from across the Spanish-speaking world and accompanying activities, enhance the communicative goals of the course.

Vocabulary
- In the opening section of each chapter, A primera vista, new, active vocabulary words are now highlighted in boldface type to help students identify the words they need to learn. Instead of being given translations of new words, students negotiate meaning by drawing on the context of words they already know.
- Recordings of the A primera vista language samples are now included in the Mosaicos audio program, giving students the opportunity to hear vocabulary pronounced in context and exposing them to a greater variety of native speakers. Recordings are included in the text audio program, available online at no charge and on an optional audio CD.
- Many dialogs have been revised to more accurately simulate authentic speech. The dialogs expose students to “natural” speech, but with careful control of vocabulary and grammar to facilitate comprehension.
- The first activity in each sequence of A primera vista is now an input-oriented activity that requires comprehension of new material but minimal or no language output.
Grammar
- The first activity in each grammar sequence is now an input-oriented activity requiring comprehension of new material but minimal or no language output. Students practice recognition of new forms before progressing to activities requiring output and open-ended communication.
- New En directo boxes, placed at strategic intervals throughout the text, highlight formulaic expressions that can be put to use immediately in the present context. These expressions enable students to sound more authentic and spontaneous as they practice using new vocabulary and structures.
- The open-ended Situaciones activities that culminate the activity sequence for each grammar point have been revised to focus more consistently on real-life situations.
Skills
- Explicit strategies are now provided in each chapter to help students develop their listening, reading and writing skills.
Listening
- Many of the listening activities in this edition are new, while others have been carefully revised to more closely simulate authentic spoken discourse. The activities now require students to listen for different purposes, such as making inferences, distinguishing between facts and opinion, identifying the speaker, and listening for specific details.
Reading
- A different reading strategy is now presented and practiced in each chapter of Mosaicos. Some strategies teach students ways of extracting specific information from a reading passage while others focus on understanding the general meaning.
- Visuals have been added to pre-reading activities in every chapter, stimulating students to activate their background knowledge and preparing them to comprehend the reading passage that follows.
- Readings in early chapters are now shorter and simpler, with the length and difficulty increasing gradually from chapter to chapter, allowing students to develop confidence in their ability to read materials in the target language.
- The text includes many new readings reflecting a greater diversity of topics with appeal to a broader range of students. New readings include:
Chapter 4: La importancia de la comunicación familiar
Chapter 5: La casa inteligente del futuro
Chapter 8: Creencias y costumbres mayas sobre la muerte
Chapter 9: ¿Es justo el mundo laboral chileno?
Chapter 10: La dieta mediterránea: ¿una nueva moda o un nuevo modo de vivir?
Chapter 11: Las enfermedades y la globalización.
Writing
- During the pre-writing stage, input discourse samples (sample texts) are now offered in each chapter, giving students a model for the writing they will be asked to do.
- Writing tasks have been revised to relate more directly to chapter theme and simplified so students can draw on their own perspectives and experiences in their writing.
Conversation
- Mosaicos now takes a process approach to conversation with the inclusion of pre-, during, and post-conversation activities.
Culture
- The Enfoque cultural section is now less textual and more visual, typically featuring several large, colorful photographs accompanied by brief, informative captions.
Music
- An exciting new section of each chapter, entitled Notas, features a song from the highlighted country or region along with related activities. Recordings of the songs are available to instructors on an accompanying CD. This new feature is designed to motivate students’ interest in Spanish language and culture through the universal medium of music.
Video
- The new Fortunas section of each chapter makes it easier for instructors to integrate video content into their courses. Visuals and activities in this section, based on an episode of the story-line video that accompanies Mosaicos, may be used in class or assigned as homework. The video is available at no charge to instructors on VHS cassettes, as well in other formats.
- In addition to the Fortunas video, a brand new video filmed on location specifically for the Mosaicos 4E Program is now available. The Entrevistas video features interviews with native-Spanish speakers on topics that relate thematically to each chapter in the text. Students listen to engaging, authentic language through each interview.
Instructor Support
- The Annotated Instructor’s Edition now includes Vínculos boxes with cross-references to related material in other components of the Mosaicos program. This enables instructors to see at a glance what material is available for homework assignments or additional practice, as well which specific materials are available for instructor use.

Additionally, there are new video activities for the Fortunas video, and video activities will also be provided for the new Entrevistas and cultural videos.

The Fortunas video will be accompanied by new comprehension activities and increased pedagogical support. The video is displayed using the Divace® media player developed by Sanako, the only media player on the market that was designed specifically for the language learner. Students can bookmark segments and view the accompanying videoscript.
