Features

The taxonomic organization of the disease chapters (Chs. 19-25) presents microbial diseases by type of pathogenic microbe so students can readily see the shared characteristics among categories of microbes.

A groundbreaking art program engages as it teaches and works hand in hand with the text:

o   Half-micrograph, half-illustration cell art illustrates microbial structures in a three-dimensional, visually striking way to draw students’ interest while teaching them what cell structures really look like (example in Ch. 3).
o   Orientation figures and step-by-step diagrams break complex processes into smaller, more manageable pieces for students. Step numbers in the text are color-coded to correspond with step numbers in the illustrations for seamless text/art integration (example in Ch. 5).
o   Figure legend questions engage students by asking them to use what they have learned in the text to answer questions about topics featured in the art.
o   Color-consistent icons and figures are used throughout the text to make it easier for the student to recognize structures and processes from chapter to chapter.

Microbe at a Glance boxes showcase representative microbes in each of the disease chapters (Chs. 19-25). These boxed "snapshots" include beautiful illustrations of the featured microbe together with succinct summaries of its family, type, virulence factors, and diseases it causes.
Clinical Case Study boxes appear throughout the book and are particularly helpful to pre-nursing and allied health students. They ask students to apply material they have learned in the text to clinical scenarios, often featuring a micrograph or clinical photo that they are asked to interpret.
Highlight boxes appear throughout and focus on interesting topics in microbiology; e.g., what causes that “fishy” smell in fish markets, what allows some organisms to glow in the dark, how gold-mining microbes are used, and which cutting-edge molecular techniques are used in microbiology.
Critical Thinking Questions, located throughout the text and at the end of each chapter, encourage students to apply what they have just read to an additional scenario or case study.
Student-focused pedagogy includes:

o    Learning Objectives are integrated throughout the chapters, at the beginning of each new section, to give students a preview of topics to be covered.

Disease chapters now focus on the diseases that students are most likely to encounter in a clinical setting, rather than on some of the “classic” diseases that have largely been eradicated in the real world (e.g., leprosy) yet still receive significant attention in other texts.
NEW — Beneficial Microbe boxes emphasize the practical and benevolent nature and uses of microbes and help students overcome the common misconception that most microbes are damaging and cause disease.
NEW — Concept Mapping sections appear in the end-of-chapter material, guiding students to create their own concept maps from a list of key terms focused around an important chapter topic. Immunology chapters (Chapters 15-18) reflect the most current understanding of this rapidly evolving field. The material in these chapters is continually reviewed in depth by immunology specialists.
Chapter 3 (Cell Structure and Function) has been reorganized to match the latest taxonomic research. Bauman de-emphasizes the term “prokaryote” and emphasizes the three domains of living organisms. The newly separate brief section on the Archaea can be covered or easily skipped over, depending on instructor preference.

Author Bios

Author Bios

Robert Bauman is a professor of biology and chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. He teaches microbiology and human anatomy and physiology. He received an M.A. degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in biology from Stanford University.

His research interests have included the morphology and ecology of freshwater algae, the cell biology of marine algae (particularly the deposition of cell walls and intercellular communication), and environmentally triggered chromogenesis in butterflies. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Texas Community College Teacher's Association (TCCTA), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and The Lepidopterist's Society. When he is not writing books, he enjoys spending time with his family: gardening, hiking, camping, playing games (with lots of laughter), and reading classics out loud by a crackling fire.
