Description

Designed for pre-nursing and allied health students (and also mixed-majors courses), Microbiology with Diseases by Body System, Second Edition retains the hallmark art program and clear writing style that have made Robert Bauman’s book a success. Filled with intriguing content based on cutting-edge research that engages students, the Second Edition features increased clinical coverage as well as a strong focus on the beneficial effects of microbes. Media Manager 2.1 provides instructors with the most robust media program available in the microbiology market for dynamic classroom presentations. In addition to all of the art, photos, and tables from the book in JPEG and PowerPoint® format and customizable PowerPoint lecture outlines, Media Manager 2.1 also includes 115 brief Microbiology Animations that depict complex microbial processes. These animations also appear on The Microbiology Place Website, with gradable quizzes, for students.

Features

  • Coverage of diseases (Chapters 19-24) is organized by body system (e.g., “Microbial Diseases of the Respiratory System”) rather than by taxonomy, or type of microbe (e.g., “Pathogenic Gram-Positive Cocci and Bacilli”). See Robert Bauman’s other version of this book, entitled Microbiology with Diseases by Taxonomy, for coverage of diseases organized by taxonomy.
  • Anatomy overview illustrations at the start of each disease chapter (Chapters 19-24) help students place diseases and their effects in the context of the human body.
  • Disease at a Glance boxes appearing in the disease chapters (Chapters 19-24) summarize a disease’s causative agent, portal of entry, symptoms, incubation period, susceptible populations, treatment, and prevention. Many of these boxes include full-body illustrations and photos that show routes of transmittal and clinical symptoms to give students a deeper understanding of the disease.
  • Clinical Case Study boxes appear throughout the text and present high-interest clinical cases, which are of particular interest and relevance to pre-nursing students.
  • Chapter-opening vignettes and Highlight Boxes focus on inherently intriguing topics in microbiology, including microbial control in sushi preparation, the use of microbes in chocolate production, and what allows some organisms to glow in the dark.
  • Robert Bauman’s engaging presentation and clear writing style draw students into the course material and make complex structures and processes easier to understand.
  • In-text pedagogical aids include, for each chapter, brief learning objectives that give students a preview of topics to be covered; figure legend questions; frequent and brief critical thinking questions; references to the companion website where students can see animations related to topics in the book; running pronunciation and etymology guides; and end-of-chapter summaries and review questions.

New To This Edition

  • Clinical Case Studies now appear throughout the book and provide a patient-centered, real-world connection to concepts presented, focusing on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
  • New and revised Clinical Case Studies have been carefully reviewed by commissioned clinical consultants to ensure that all clinical content is impeccable and up-to-date.
  • NEW! The Beneficial Microbe boxes emphasize the practical and benevolent nature and uses of microbes and help students overcome the common misconception that most microbes are damaging and cause disease.
  • NEW! Applying Molecular Techniques boxes present examples of cutting-edge molecular techniques currently being used in microbiology.
  • Substantially rewritten immunology chapters (Chapters 15-18), reviewed in depth by immunology specialists and classroom instructors, reflect state-of-the-science knowledge about this continually evolving topic and provide students with an accessible framework for learning this material.
  • Color bands at the top of the pages of the disease chapters (Chapters 19-24) make the disease chapters easier to locate.
  • The color palette has been made brighter throughout the book, giving the figures greater vibrancy.
  • An innovative art program that is visually stunning and pedagogically superior includes a variety of figure types and features:
    • Half-illustration/half-micrograph 3-D cellular art is unique among microbiology textbooks and sets a new standard for teaching cellular structure. (See several flagship figures in Chapter 3.)
    • Superior text-art integration helps students visualize complex processes. (See the blue circled step numbers coordinated across the narrative text and the art in Chapter 5.)
    • Colors and icons are used consistently throughout the text to make recognition of structures and processes from chapter to chapter easy for students.
    • 160 photographs out of a total of 500 are new to the Second Edition.

Author Bios

Robert W. Bauman, Jr. holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford University, an M.A. in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a professor of biology and former chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. He has been teaching microbiology and human anatomy and physiology since 1988. In 2004, the students of Amarillo College selected Dr. Bauman as the recipient of the John. F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award.

His research interests have included the morphology and ecology of freshwater algae, the cell biology of marine algae (particularly the deposition of cell walls and intercellular communication), and environmentally triggered chromogenesis in butterflies. His dissertation research at Stanford was on intercellular and cell growth in red algae at the Hopkins Marine Station.

Robert Bauman is the author of another microbiology textbook at Benjamin Cummings, Microbiology with Diseases by Taxonomy, 2/e (copyright 2007).  Before becoming a Benjamin Cummings author, he also co-authored an anatomy and physiology laboratory manual (Whittier Publications), a microbiology laboratory manual (B&C Publishing), and an anatomy and physiology study guide (Harcourt Brace).  He is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and Texas Community College Teacher’s Association (TCCTA).
