Description

The Little, Brown Reader, one of the best-known and most respected thematic readers available today, continues its tradition of excellence by bringing together contemporary and classic readings with extensive critical reading and writing instruction and numerous illustrations.

The strength of The Little, Brown Reader has always been its distinctive collection of readings and its unmatched apparatus; the Tenth Edition enhances both features, further improving the text's focus on critical thinking and writing. Little Brown works in every classroom—a range of themes and a flexible format encourage a variety of teaching styles. The readings are well balanced with selections by well-known writers, new writers, and students.

Features

  • LBR offers the most rhetorical instruction—over 100 pages—available in any thematic reader. Chapters 1-5, which introduce students to strategies for critical reading, the writing process, academic forms of writing and argument and of writing about visuals, set this text apart.
  • “Casebooks” in the thematic chapters provide clusters of readings on provocative issues within the broader theme/topic of the chapter.
  • A rich array of visuals, including photos with writing prompts at the beginning of each thematic chapter (Chs. 6-16), offer a wealth of opportunity to view and write about images.
  • “Short Views” (12-15 short quotes per chapter) at the beginning of Chapters 6-16 provide quick "jumpstarts" for class discussion.
  • “Topics for Critical Thinking and Writing” questions (4-8 questions) ask students to analyze and compare readings.
  • An extensive Instructor's Manual, written by the authors, includes analyses of all entries (including pictures), tips on teaching these materials, and additional assignments.

New To This Edition

  • 32 new readings, or about ¼ of the total, represent both classic (Francis Bacon, E.B. White) and current (Richard Rodriguez, Dave Eggers, Chesa Boudin, Michael Chabon) writers.  Six of these are by writers of color, and two new students essays are by a Hispanic- and an Asian-American writer.
  • A new thematic unit, "Consuming Desires," focuses on the most basic realities of our lives—our needs for food and shelter.
  • Two provocative new casebooks—on Gay Marriage and on Testing and Grading—join two widely admired casebooks retained from previous editions on Race and E-Mail.
  • As always, an expansive rhetorical introduction—five chapters focusing on the writing process, academic writing and argument, and writing about images—offers far more than most competing readers.
