Description

Listening takes an experiential approach to listening instruction, providing extensive applications and cases within the context of a sound theoretical framework.

The text encourages students to view listening as a process involving six interrelated components, which are developed along the parallel dimensions of theory and skill building. Within the unifying theoretical framework of the HURIER model, students develop an understanding of the listening process and acquire observable listening skills.

The fourth edition continues to explore the impact of culture, technology, and globalization, and raises ethical questions to promote students’ consideration of the responsibilities associated with listening behavior. Extensive self-assessment instruments, individual and group activities, and case studies further distinguish this engaging text. Students will readily recognize the important role listening plays in helping them to achieve their personal and professional goals while acquiring strategies to become more effective listeners.

Features

  • The unifying HURIER behavioral model (Hearing, Understanding, Remembering, Interpreting, Evaluating, and Responding), with an accompanying listening assessment instrument, provides a clear link between what is taught and what is assessed and allows content to be individualized so students can determine their own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Cases at the beginning of each chapter provoke thought and discussion, add vividly illustrate the relevance of the principles discussed.
  • A wide variety of exercises and activities at the end of each chapter helps students understand and apply the principles and skills presented.
  • An exploration of the difficulties and uncertainties involved in ethical listening makes students aware of dilemmas that may arise in listening situations.
  • The latest listening theory and research ensures that students and instructors have the most up-to-date listening textbook on the market.
  • “Listening Challenges” (Ch.10) introduces issues that arise for listeners as they confront continuous change, globalization, gender considerations, and high-technology environments.  This chapter encourages students to consider the broader implications of their listening behavior.

New To This Edition

  • The 4th edition has an increased emphasis on listening as it impacts students’ personal and social experiences.  New cases focus on how listening effectiveness plays a critical role in numerous current news events, and students are asked to consider listening in the context of personal and social responsibility.
  • The sections on emotional and cultural intelligence have been expanded in recognition of their importance to students’ ability to communicate effectively in increasingly diverse communities.  .
  • A new section on Listening to Self is included in Chapter 1, helping students to appreciate the importance of increasing self-awareness, personalizing knowledge, and subsequently improving performance.
  • Coverage of the impact of technology on listening has been further enhanced throughout the text.
  • Additional questions for discussion and reflection have been added to each chapter.  By “Challenging Assumptions,” students are encouraged to critically consider the relevance and value of the ideas and principles they study.
  • The new edition has been thoroughly updated with current research and new examples to provide the most recent information available.
