Description
Leyendas del mundo hispano presents 12 legends from the Spanish-speaking world, chosen to illustrate both universal and distinctive perspectives. Although American students are aware of legends and myths they have heard since childhood, they may not be aware of their purpose or easily associate the lessons with legends from the Spanish-speaking world. All of these legends have an indisputable potential for helping students develop their creativity, as well as to discover both universal and culturally unique values.
Each chapter opens with the Contexto cultural with information to help students situate the legend within its historical and cultural context. Preparación activities refer to information in the Contexto cultural, introduce new vocabulary and concepts, and supply advance organizers and global questions for the reading. Low-frequency vocabulary is glossed when it is not transparent from the context of the legend and not included in the pre-reading activities.
Post-reading activities progress from convergent Comprensión activities to Aplicación to higher-order Análisis, síntesis, y evaluación. Comprensión activities vary from chapter to chapter, including “Who might have said?” to “Order the events and retell the story.” Aplicación activities have students do interpretive reading and role-play. The Análisis, síntesis y evaluación activities include further investigation, debate, reflection and guided writing.
Features
· A panorama of 12 legends from the Spanish-speaking world including illustrations of the blending of cultures (Spanish, indigenous, mestizo, Jewish, African, Arab), the creation of new legends, and the retention of old traditions.
· Following Bloom’s Taxonomy, the activities build from activating background knowledge (Preparación) to lower-level understanding of the plot line (Comprensión), to putting oneself into the story (Aplicación) and finally to higher level activities (Análisis, Síntesis y Evaluación). Each chapter includes foro and debate activities to develop writing and speaking proficiency.
· Audio CD accompanying text includes a recording of each legend, read conversationally by a native speaker from the appropriate region.
· All chapters include a map and activity related to the geographic location of the legend.
· The glosses have been revised to avoid English translation and use synonyms in Spanish wherever possible. The end glossary contains more than 1000 Spanish-English entries, including both glossed terms from the readings and others students may have to check to verify their understanding.
New To This Edition
For the Third Edition, we have extensively reformulated the approach to echo Bloom’s Taxonomy of Intellectual Behaviors; for the cognitive domain, Bloom identified six levels—from the simple recall or recognition of facts (the lowest level) to the more complex synthesis and evaluation of ideas (the highest levels). The activities in Leyendas del mundo hispano have been revised and reordered to move students through the six levels as they interact with each legend. This approach meshes very well with the National Standards in Foreign Language Education and develops the areas of “communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.
One new legend, “El Caleuche y la Pincoya” narrates the ghost ship and siren legend from Chiloé. It presents ancient themes of marine mysteries and modern themes of preservation of the seas of the world.
The glosses have been revised to avoid English translation and use synonyms in Spanish wherever possible. The end glossary contains more than 1000 Spanish-English entries, including both glossed terms from the readings and others students may have to check to verify their understanding.
