Description

Michael G. Wood’s straightforward and complete lab manual guides students through hands-on exercises that reinforce concepts they have learned in their two-semester anatomy & physiology lecture course. The full-color illustrations and step-by-step instructions are designed to help students visualize structures, understand three-dimensional relationships, and comprehend complex physiological processes. Many of the illustrations are from Martini/Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Eighth Edition, making this lab manual a perfect companion to that textbook. It is also designed for use with any other two-semester anatomy & physiology lecture book.

The Laboratory Manual is also available in Cat and Pig Versions.

Features

  • Illustrations by renowned medical illustrators William Ober and Claire Garrison are precise, accurate, and the best illustrations currently available in any anatomy & physiology lab manual for teaching structures and concepts. The illustrations are modified from Martini/Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Eighth Edition, making this lab manual a perfect companion to that textbook for instructors who want lab manual art to match textbook art. This book is also a perfect companion to any other anatomy & physiology textbook for instructors who want students in the lab to see different illustrations from what is in their textbook.
  • Award-winning photographs by biomedical photographer Ralph Hutchings are clear and crisp. The photos are from Martini/Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology,Eighth Edition, making this lab manual a perfect companion to that textbook for those instructors who want lab manual photos to match textbook photos. This book is also a perfect companion to any other anatomy & physiology textbook for instructors who want students in the lab to see different photos from what is in their textbook.
  • Side-by-Side Figures provide students with multiple views of the same structure, typically pairing an artist’s drawing with a cadaver photograph. This approach allows students to compare the illustrator's rendering with a photo of the actual structure as it may be seen in the laboratory or operating room.
  • Step-by-Step Figures break down multifaceted processes into numbered step-by-step illustrations that coordinate with the author’s narrative descriptions.
  • Macro-to-Micro Figures help students to bridge the gap between familiar and unfamiliar structures of the body by sequencing anatomical views from whole organs or other structures to their smaller parts. A typical illustration might combine a simple orientation diagram (indicating where an organ or structure is located in the human body) with a large, vivid illustration of that organ or other structure, a corresponding sectional view, and a photomicrograph.
  • Histology images are paired with corresponding illustrations to facilitate students’ understanding of the microscopic level of anatomy and prepare them for what they will see through the microscope.
  • QuickCheck Questions at the end of most activity introductions help students assess their understanding of the material before beginning the actual laboratory work.
  • Clinical Application boxes present clinical information useful to students who plan a career in the allied health field.
  • Study Tip boxes give students handy mnemonic devices, tools for learning certain relationships, and general suggestions for retaining the complex concepts that underlie the study of A&P.
  • Biopac Activities are incorporated within some of the lab exercises to allow instructors who have Biopac equipment in their lab to use it effectively with this lab manual. (Biopac equipment, manufactured by the Biopac company, includes clinical instruments, such as blood pressure gauges, that hook up to any standard computer to convert the computer’s monitor into a clinical monitor. It allows students to record clinical data, such as blood pressure, from their own bodies.)
  • Lab Reports, following the exercises, can be completed by students and handed in for grading. Tasks include labeling illustrations, drawing structures, matching related items, completing tables, recording data, writing observations, and interpreting results.
  • Anatomical terminology draws from the standard terminology adopted by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists that appears in the Terminologia Anatomica reference text.
  • The Cat and Pig versions of this lab manual include Cat and Pig dissection exercises with dissection photos taken by one of the anatomy field’s premier dissection/photographer teams (Shawn Miller and Mark Nielsen of the University of Utah) paired with precise illustrations by Bill Ober and Claire Garrison.

New To This Edition

  • Simplified narrative presentations streamline the content of the lab manual.
  • Three key revisions made to the drawing activities make learning easier:
    • NEW! Sketch to Learn! guided drawing activities are accompanied by non-threatening hand-drawn pencil sketches that serve as style examples to convey to students that they are not expected to produce “art”–just simple sketches that include the relevant structures to help them learn.
    • NEW! Drawing boxes give students clear indications of where and how much to draw.
    • More drawing activities appear throughout the activities and Lab Reports in response to instructor and student requests.
  • New appendicular skeleton illustrations have been added to Exercise 15.
  • New micrographs, taken by the author using state-of-the-art equipment, show microscopic structures more clearly in Exercises 5, 7, 8, and 9.
  • Labeling activities have been moved from the narrative presentations within lab exercises to the Lab Reports at the end of exercises for easier practice and assessment. Additionally, the number of labeling activities has been increased.
  • Data tables have been moved out of the Lab Reports and into the relevant activities in lab exercises so that students have everything they need in one location when doing the activities.
  • NEW! Clinical Challenge questions now appear at the end of Lab Reports and ask students to apply the information from the Clinical Application boxes they read within the exercises.
  • Upgraded Martini art comes from Martini/Nath Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Eighth Edition, giving this edition of the lab manual more saturated colors and dimensionality.
  • The new myA&P website (www.myaandp.com) includes Pre-lab Quizzes, Post-lab Quizzes, the Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL) 2.0 virtual anatomy practice tool, and the 3D Anatomy Animations with gradable quizzes. Access to the website is via an access code sheet bound in to the front of the Lab Manual. If an instructor also wants students to have a PAL CD-ROM, the CD-ROM can be added to the package for no additional charge.
  • Clear and easily identifiable in-text reference to the myA&P website appear at the beginning of every exercise. Additionally, PAL is mentioned at the start of each relevant exercise, and a navigation pathway points students exactly to where the relevant PAL content can be found.
