Description

Teaching students to make wise choices in a geologically active world, Investigations in Environmental Geology covers current issues within the scope of four content sections. Introduction to geology, natural hazards, water resources, geologic resources and planning are addressed within 18 inquiry-based exercises.  Broad introductions and content embedded into each exercise make the manual appropriate as a stand-alone guide for the classroom.

Features

A hands-on, inquiry-based, problem-solving approach is used throughout.

Relevant, contemporary topics in many exercises encourage students to explore national and local news.

Opportunities for students to develop skills in project organization, report presentation, and peer review are presented to support the active learning environment.

Section 1, Introduction to Geology, provides a basic overview of the elements of the science and includes an exercise that introduces students to basic measurements and calculations that are used in the manual.

Section 2, Geologic Hazards, pays particular attention to human interactions with the geologic environment and includes important examples from around the world.

Section 3, Water Resources and Contamination, includes cases that ask students to explore local or regional topics.

Section 4, Geologic Resources and Planning, further explores the role that geosciences play in our life and applies lessons and techniques to regional land-use.

New To This Edition

Extensively rewritten and expanded introductions and content within each exercise provide students with basic background material for stand-alone use of the manual.

A wide range of images extend the exercises and include Lidar images, maps, photos, aerial images, topographic maps, and illustrations.

The coastal hazards exercise explains recent events and allows students to predict future changes.

A thorough revision to the volcanoes exercise includes recent research on Mt. Rainier.

Hazards around the United States are covered in political and population context and encourage local and regional research.

The section on water resources has been condensed to include the most widely used exercises based on reviewer feedback.

A streamlined organization presents geologic resources and planning into one cohesive section.

Pedagogical enhancements include a variety of new case histories and Internet addresses available for supplemental material related to each exercise.
