Description
Introductory Algebra 3e is appropriate for a 1-semester course in Introductory, Beginning or Elementary Algebra where a solid foundation in algebraic skills and reasoning is being built for those students who have little or no previous experience with the topic. The ultimate goal of this text is to effectively prepare students to transition to Intermediate Algebra. Introductory Algebra 3e is a worktext, meaning the design is open and friendly with wide margins so can you can encourage your students to take notes and work exercises right on the text page. Also with worktexts, images/visuals are used more frequently to convey the math concept so there are fewer words and less text for the student to read.
NOTE: Should you prefer this Martin-Gay material presented within a hardcover desgin, please see Beginning Algebra 3e.
Features
HOW ARE YOUR STUDENTS’ PREPARING FOR YOUR TEST?
Are your students struggling to keep up with the material, in turn affecting their performance on your tests?
To help your students’ keep pace with the material they are learning, Elayn offers Integrated Reviews (mid-chapter exercises) at logical breaking points in each chapter. Assign the integrated reviews so your students can pause and assimilate the skills and concepts they learned separately over the past several sections.
Elayn has also added Mixed Practice Exercises (NEW!) to the exercise sets in this 3rd edition! The mixed practice exercises require students to identify the problem type they are being asked to solve and determine what strategy they should use in solving it - just as they would need to do on a test or exam!
Many of Elayn’s exercise sets include Review Exercises (NEW!) that are keyed to the sections of the chapter, Mixed Review Exercises (NEW!) that are not directly keyed to the sections, and Cumulative Review Exercises that cover concepts from all chapters up to and including the current one. Include some of these mixed practice and review exercises on your assignments to help your students’ prepare for the types of problems they will be asked to solve on your quiz or test.
WHEN ARE YOUR STUDENTS’ STUDYING FOR THE TEST?
Many of your students’ are waiting until late the night before the test. Which is more adversly affected, their test score or their confidence?
Elayn is determined to reach students when they are studying for their test, late the night before, when they are at their most “teachable moment.” She created the Chapter Test Prep Video CD (NEW!) to help your students’ during this critical time of need. The Chapter Test Prep Video CD contains video of Elayn working out the solutions to each and every problem on the chapter tests from the textbook. Have your students’ work the chapter test and when they get stuck on a problem they can refer to the video to get help from the author herself! It's like having a tutor at the click of the button! This innovative resource is found in the back of the textbook and within the accompanying MyMathLab course.
Don't worry if you typically assign Chapter Tests from the text as a required quiz or test. You can quickly and easily replicate a new version of the Chapter test using our TestGen software. We’ve included algorithmic versions of the Chapter Test files in TestGen so you can use the in-text Chapter Tests for practice and then easily replicate a version to use as your assigned quiz or test.
HOW ARE YOUR STUDENTS’ STUDY SKILLS?
Are poor study skills impacting their ability to pass this course on the first attempt?
Elayn is passionate about helping every student succeed. She begins the textbook with Section 1.1: Tips for Success in Mathematics, a dedicated study skills section that allows you to efficiently cover student success topics such as Getting Ready for the Course, Using the Textbook Effectively, Preparing for and Taking Exams and Managing Your Time. This section gives you an easy way to assign study skill problems and activities that your students’ will surely benefit from. Also, Elayn offers lecture videos (on CD and within MyMathLab) keyed to each section of the text. This means your students’ can watch a video presentation of the study skills material covered in important section.
Elayn also wants to make it easy for you to integrate this study skills component throughout your course. Study Skill Builders (NEW)! are assignable, study skills exercises found throughout the textbook at the end of many exercise sets. Study Skill Builders reinforce the material found in Section 1.1: Tips for Success in Mathematics, making it easy for you to assign study skills exercises as part of homework.
HOW MANY EXERCISES DO YOU WORK IN CLASS?
How does this in-class work prepare your students’ for their homework?
Elayn provides a Practice Problem in the margin of the text next to each worked-out example so your students’ have easy access to exercises they can work to reinforce the skill/concept immediately after it is presented in class.
DO YOUR STUDENTS’ UNDERSTAND HOW MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS RELATE?
How could this affect their success in their next math course?
Elayn understands the importance of preparing students for success, not just in their current course, but also in the ones that follow. That’s why in this 3rd edition, she introduces The Bigger Picture (NEW!) The Bigger Picture is a recurring feature, found at the end of appropriate exercise sets, that has your students’ create (and then continually expand) a working outline of the main concepts of the course. After your student creates the new portion of their outline they are then asked to work appropriate exercises. By developing the outline and working the exercises, they can begin to transition from thinking “section-by-section” to thinking about how the mathematics in the course is part of the “bigger picture” of mathematics in general!
Elayn also includes Concept Checks following key in-text examples so students can pause and check if they are grasping the concept being developed before they move on to the next example. To build upon the Concept Checks, Concept Check Exercises (NEW!) have been added to the section exercise sets. The Annotated Instructor’s Edition includes instructor references from the Concept Checks to the related exercises so you can easily select which you want to assign! Concept Extensions (formerly Combining Concepts) are also included in the exercise sets and are exercises that require students to combine several skills or concepts at a time.
HOW COMFORTABLE ARE YOUR STUDENTS’ WITH MATHEMATICAL TERMS?
Does this affect how they interpret instructions, leading to confusion and frustration?
Elayn provides you with Vocabulary Checks at the end of each chapter, before the Chapter Highlights. These provide your students' with an opportunity to become more familiar with the use of mathematical terms as they strenghten their verbal skills.
ARE YOUR STUDENTS’ EASILY FRUSTRATED BY COMMON MISTAKES?
Do you find that many are making the same mistakes over-and-over again?
The Helpful Hints that Elayn provides in the text are strategically placed where students are most likely to need immediate reinforcement. The Helpful Hints are based on Elayn’s years of classroom experience. They contain the same practical advice on applying mathematical concepts that Elayn has been offering to her own students’ to help them avoid the common trouble areas and mistakes that lead to their confusion and frustration.
ARE YOU TEACHING THIS COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME?
How much time do you have to prep for this course?
Elayn knows what it is like for a new instructor teaching this course, and so she offers a number of time-saving resources to help prepare course materials quickly and easily. Watch Elayn’s Instructor-to-Instructor videos (available on CD and within the accompanying MyMathLab course) for tips, hints, and suggestions for engaging students and presenting key topics.
In your Annotated Instructor’s Edition, Elayn offers Teaching Tips at key points throughout the text (in the margin), and provides answers to all exercises printed right on the same text page. In your Instructor’s Resource Manual, you will find one-page Mini-Lectures for every section of the text, Classroom Worksheets, Group Activities, Answers to all items from the text, and various pre-made test forms.
New To This Edition
This revision of Introductory Algebra continues Elayn's focus on the student and what they need to be successful. Consider the following...
Is this going to be on the test? How many times have you been asked that question? Is it because your students are worried about studying the right things so there aren’t any surprises? When are your students studying for the test? Is it late the night before your in-class exam and does their anxiety build as they realize they aren’t prepared?
How are your students study skills? Are poor study skills impacting your students’ ability pass this course on the first attempt?
Are your students struggling to see how all the mathematical concepts relate? How are you encouraging your students to take an active role in understanding the mathematical concepts they are learning?
