Description

Thoroughly updated with practical information on the latest developments in the biotechnology field, this popular text provides the tools, practice, and basic knowledge for success in the biotech workforce.

With its balanced coverage of basic cell and molecular biology, fundamental techniques, historical accounts, and hands-on applications, the Second Edition emphasizes the relevance of biotechnology in agriculture, medicine, and industry. Special sections on ethical and environmental issues in biotechnology, career profiles, and research “tools” are also highlighted in the book. The Second Edition features a thoroughly revised chapter on ethics.

Features

  • Concise overviews examine cutting-edge techniques and concepts including Bioinformatics, Proteomics, and Genomics, as well as detailed information on agricultural, medical, forensic, and regulatory issues that impact the biotechnology industry.
  • Career Profile Boxes in each chapter introduce students to different career paths in the biotechnology industry and provide detailed information on job functions, salaries, and guidance for preparing to enter the workforce.
  • You Decide Boxes in each chapter stimulate ethical discussion by giving students questions and information relating to the social and ethical implications of biotechnology and regulations.
  • Tools of the Trade Boxes provide details on modern techniques and methods related to each chapter’s content and the biotech industry.
  • Q & A Boxes in the body of each chapter address “frequently asked questions” that students might be wondering about as they read the book.
  • End-of-Chapter Questions & Activities encourage students to apply what they’ve learned and include internet assignments that explore cutting edge topics. Suggested answers are provided in the Appendix.
  • Abundant illustrations, instructional diagrams, and flow charts present modern images, step-by-step explanations of complex processes, and include new figures on the use of gene microarrays, PCR, and nanobiotechnology.
  • Companion Website offers downloadable art from the text, flashcards, a glossary, chapter reviews, and additional web resources and “Keeping Current” web links.

New To This Edition

  • Expanded “Keeping Current” website links have moved from the textbook to the companion website and help students access the most current information in the rapidly changing biotechnology field.
  • Updated content throughout the book includes new sections on “Business of Biotechnology,” RNA interference (RNAi),computer automated DNA sequencing, metagenomics (environmental genomics), stem cell research, genetically-modified foods, pharmacogenomics, and more.
  • New and Updated You Decide boxes explore current issues such as biotech drug controversies, bioterror weapon sequences, and the confidentiality of clinical trial data.
  • New Instructor’s Test Bank includes multiple choice questions for each chapter.
  • A section on “Business of Biotechnology” in Chapter 1 describes biotech company organization and structure, top biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and features updated data on the biotechnology industry worldwide.
  • Updated information on the completion of the Human Genome Project is featured in Chapter 3, including increased content on genomics and related disciplines reflecting the "omics" revolution in modern biology. New content on computer automated DNA sequencing and RNA interference.
  • A section on metagenomics (environmental genomics) has been added to Chapter 5. New content on vaccines including the Gardasil vaccine for human papillomavirus is also now included.
  • Major updates on new approaches for producing and isolating stem cells in Chapter 11 include nuclear reprogramming and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) and stem cell and cloning regulations.
  • Content on medicines from aquatic organisms is now featured in Chapter 10.
  • An increased emphasis on bioethics throughout the text has been achieved through updated and increased number of "You Decide" boxes, and a thoroughly revised Chapter 13 on Ethics and Biotechnology, with updated information on genetically modified foods, stem cell regulations, patient rights, and more.
