New To This Edition

A new boxed feature: “Interpersonal Communication and Emotion: Connecting Heart-to-Heart” emphasizes research conclusions and communication skills related to emotion and interpersonal communication. The new material will help students understand that emotional connections are essential in developing an “other-oriented” relational perspective with interpersonal partners.
Two new Appendices have been added: Located in the Instructor's Manual, Appendix A presents a brief digest of all interpersonal communication skills discussed in the book while Appendix B offers a brief summary of interpersonal communication theory.
Chapter 4 begins with a significantly expanded discussion of the multifaceted nature of human diversity by including new information about race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age and social class. This enhanced discussion of diversity will help students understand how they can become more interculturally competent.
From expanded sections in Chapters 1 and 12 to the addition of new research and applications throughout the book, there is added emphasis on the role technology plays in the development and maintenance of interpersonal relationships. This frank discussion, which includes current research on the beneficial and harmful affects of computer mediated communication, will interest students and allow them to see how the communication research relates to their lives.
New research conclusions are included that relate to such “dark side” interpersonal issues as jealousy, obsessive relational intrusion, relational violence, and stalking. Students will gain a realistic picture of how interpersonal relationships can result in aggression.
Expanded Coverage of Social Support: New material related to social support and listening in Chapter 5 as well as a new discussion of social support an relationship development in Chapter 10 augment the discussion of how social support skills can enhance relationships.
New Material on Power and Language: Chapter 6 includes a discussion of research and skills that add to or diminish the power of interpersonal messages based upon the words we use or don’t use.
New Material on Practical Tips for Managing Conflict: New tips and strategies have been added to Chapter 8 to help students work through interpersonal conflict.
Expanded and Revised Pedagogy: New cartoons, new margin definitions, updated recap boxes, and new “Building Your Skills” boxes have been added throughout the book to help students master the material.
