Description

Offering selections from both popular and scholarly sources this new reader not only helps students to better understand concepts in interpersonal communication but provides practical advice which helps them become better communicators. The Interpersonal Communication Reader features an abundance of brief, engaging selections on topics such as feedback, gossip, and apologies, that cannot be covered in great depth in a textbook. Emphasizing the practical skills of interpersonal communication and relationships, the selections also highlight the theoretical and research foundations on which these skills rest. The articles are presented with a variety of learning aids to make them interactive experiences with immediate and practical pay-off.

Features

  • Contains relatively brief articles so that students easily can read one or more along with a textbook unit or chapter.
  • Addresses the real-life, practical needs of people wanting to become better interpersonal communicators to provide relevance and context to their studies.
  • Includes six types of sidebars to accompany each article, highlighting the relevant article discussion in order to expand and refine student learning:
    • “Cultural Analysis” sidebars invite students to analyze the influence of culture on different aspects of interpersonal communication and encourage them to examine their own cultural beliefs and values.

    • “Ethical Judgments” sidebars ask students to consider the ethical implications of communication behaviors discussed in the article.

    • “Communicating Skillfully” sidebars apply concepts to real life by asking students how they would communicate in a situation related to a topic presented in the article.

    • “Explaining Ideas” sidebars prompt students to explain one or more of the concepts discussed in the article, usually as these concepts relate to their own interpersonal interactions.

    • “Evaluating Ideas” sidebars invite students to evaluate the usefulness of a concept or of an article as a whole. These sidebars ask students if they would amend or add anything to the substance of the article, for example, to the author's classification of lies, communication analyses, or explanations of relationship myths.

    • “Brain Talk” sidebars offer suggestions for thinking about interpersonal communication more critically and creatively.

  • Identifies the theme and major concepts presented in each article in a “Headnotes” preface, which helps students focus their reading.
  • Offers articles from a wide variety of sources addressed to the educated consumer (and to college students beginning their study of interpersonal communication), rather than the communication researcher or theorist.
  • Provides a grid coordinating the articles to the units or chapters in some of the major interpersonal texts on the market in order to help instructors easily use this reader to complement and supplement their primary text.
