Description
This text provides a highly interactive presentation of the theory, research, and skills of interpersonal communication, with strong, integrated discussions of diversity, ethics, workplace issues, and technology.
Recognized for its ability to help students understand the crucial connection between theory and practice, this eleventh edition presents a comprehensive view of the theory and research in interpersonal communication and, at the same time, guides students to improve a wide range of interpersonal skills and to apply these to personal, social, and workplace relationships. Contextually-placed web icons in the text's margins direct students to the book's Companion Website where they engage in interactive exercises or simulations that help them gain a better understanding of concepts presented in the text. Superior coverage of cultural diversity, ethics, interpersonal communication in the workplace, and the workings and effects of technology make The Interpersonal Communication Book the best choice for preparing students to communicate successfully in today's world.

Time orientation has been moved to the chapter on nonverbal communication and stereotypes, formerly in the perception chapter, has been integrated into the principles for intercultural communication.
Chapter 3. The Self in Interpersonal Communication: The discussion of self-destructive beliefs has been expanded somewhat and the discussions of self-disclosure and communication apprehension have been streamlined into a better balance with the other topics in the chapter. A variety of studies on the influence of culture, gender, and technology on these processes have been integrated.
Chapter 4. Perception in Interpersonal Communication: The discussion of stereotypes has been moved to the chapter on culture and the self-test on perception has been shortened.
Chapter 5. Listening in Interpersonal Communication: Implications of the model of listening, a reworking of the benefits of listening, a clarification of inappropriate active listening tendencies, and a more focused presentation of the situational nature of listening are new to this revision.
Chapter 6. Universals of Verbal and Nonverbal Messages: Meaning and message characteristics are now presented as principles, additional research and insight into politeness have been added, and the assertiveness self-test has been rewritten to focus more clearly and more succinctly on the major concerns of assertive messages.

Chapter 8. Nonverbal Messages: A new section on current research on the functions of nonverbal communication now introduces the chapter, the sections on culture have been pulled together into a new section, Nonverbal Communication and Culture, and time considerations, formerly in the culture chapter, now appear in this chapter along with the discussion of time communication.
Chapter 9. Messages and Conversation: A new section discussing gossip and the workplace grapevine has been added to this chapter.
Chapter 10. Universals of Interpersonal Relationships: The discussion of what relationships do for you has been shortened and focused more clearly on the essential advantages and disadvantages and two additional relationship models have been added as tables to further clarify the progression of relationships.
Chapter 11. Interpersonal Relationships: Growth and Deterioration: The sections on attraction theory and romantic rules have been expanded somewhat. The section on relationship deterioration has been rewritten to focus on causes and effects, the long list of stages of relationship deterioration has been deleted, and the self-test on commitment has been recast as a theory and research box.
Chapter 12. Interpersonal Relationships: Friendship, Love, Family, and Workplace: The romanticism and the relationship preference self-tests have been moved to the website to improve the flow of topics. Comparisons of face-to-face and online relationships have been added and the table on the changing American family has been totally updated with the most recent data available.
Chapter 13. Conflict in Interpersonal Relationships: The basic concepts of conflict have been recast as principles and discussions of the inevitability of conflict, styles of conflict, and the factors that influence conflict management strategies have been added.
Chapter 14. Power in Interpersonal Relationships: The section on Machiavellianism has been moved to the companion website and a self-test on the types of power has been added to introduce the discussion of power types.
