Features
Comprehensive coverage of international relations theory. International Relations offers the widest survey of theoretical perspectives, ranging from realism and liberalism to feminism, peace studies, postmodernism, and constructivism. In addition, text-wide discussion of three core principles–dominance, reciprocity, and identity–offer a consistent opportunity to consider the application of theory to different issues.
Balanced emphasis on international security and international political economy. Goldstein/Pevehouse is the only text that equally covers security and economic issues and illustrates how these issues overlap and affect each other.
Historical context throughout the text. To place recent trends in the context of the international system’s evolution in the 20th and 21stcenturies, Chapter 1 presents a brief historical survey, and timelines throughout the text provide historical background when needed.
“The Big Picture” boxes and podcasts identify each chapter’s essential lesson for students to focus their learning on. In the podcasts, the authors expand on the lesson and apply it to recent events.
“Policy Perspectives” boxes ask students to take the perspective of a national leader faced with a real-world situation and to develop a policy in response. These boxes bridge theory and policy and reveal the tradeoffs inherent to decision-making and the connections between foreign and domestic politics.
The most extensive use of illustrations. The numerous four-color figures, tables, photos, and maps enliven the text’s narrative, make abstract concepts more concrete, and facilitate critical thinking.
Integrated study guide. Each chapter concludes with a chapter summary, list of key terms, and critical thinking questions.
An special insert on Oxfam. “Advancing the Global South: A Rights-Based Approach to Development” is written for this text by one of the leading NGOs in the field of international development and comes straight from Oxfam’s experience of working in the world’s poorest countries. This section insert covers seven major topics–poverty, natural resources, peace and security, equality of women, indigenous and minority rights, trade, and foreign aid; each topic includes a conceptual discussion, human-scale case study, and photos to help students understand and engage with the Global South.
MyPoliSciKit for International Relations (www.mypoliscikit.com). This premium online learning companion features multimedia and interactive activities to help students make connections between concepts and current events. The book-specific assessment, video case studies, role-playing simulations, mapping exercises, Financial Times newsfeeds, weekly current events quizzes, and politics blog encourage comprehension and critical thinking. With Grade Tracker, instructors can easily follow students’ work on the site and their progress on each activity. MyPoliSciKit is available at no additional charge when packaged with this book. To learn more, please visit www.mypoliscikit.com or contact your Pearson representative.
Open-access companion website (www.IRtext.com). The marginal icons in International Relations lead to “The Big Picture” podcasts, links to videos from PBS’s The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and other news sources, and online practice tests. The website also includes chapter summaries and critical thinking questions.
New To This Edition
The most up-to-date analysis of world affairs available in any introductory text helps students become more informed of political, economic, and cultural events throughout the world and then go beyond the headlines to see the broader patterns in international relations. In addition to many new photos from the world’s hotspots and figures and tables with the latest data, the Brief Fifth Edition covers the latest developments on the economic recession and its effect around the globe; wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; elections in Pakistan and Zimbabwe; Russia’s reemergence as a global power; the expansion of the European Union; the International Criminal Court and Sudan; the controversy over China’s currency manipulation; ongoing concerns over North Korea and Iran’s nuclear weapons programs; political instability in Congo, Guinea, and Sudan; and the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
Increased integration of the three core principles–dominance, reciprocity, and identity–in the “Big Picture” boxes, in eight new “Big Picture” podcasts, and in every chapter help students focus on a set of key ideas in IR and use them to interpret current events.
