Description
This highly praised new text provides superior coverage of IR history, focuses on the changing nature of foreign policy challenges, and ends with a unique "Regional Applications" section that drives home the regional nature of IR today.
Written in the belief that students need to know the Cold War legacy of international relations in order ro truly understand present and future IR issues, Hastedt and Knickrehm's new text provides a historical perspective and examines how foreign policy challenges have and continue to change. The book's theme of “A Changing World” focuses on the differences between Cold War policy and post-Cold War policy as an intuitive framework for better understanding the IR issues confronting us at the beginning of the 21st century. Because so many IR issues in today's world are regional in nature, a unique Regional Applications ends the text, providing a series of chapters on various regions that will help students understand key actors and potential flashpoints of politics in the 21st Century.

Glenn Hastedt is a professor of political science at James Madison University where he teaches courses on American foreign policy and international relations. He received his Ph.D. from Indiana University and began his teaching career at the State University of New York-Geneseo. Dr. Hastedt has edited two books on intelligence, Controlling Intelligence (Frank Cass, 1991) and Analysis and Estimates (Frank Cass, 1996). The second book is based on papers presented at a conference on intelligence held in Ottawa in October, 1994 which he helped organize. He is the author of American Foreign Policy: Past, Present, Future (Prentice-Hall, 3rd edition, 1997), and edits the Dushkin Publishers American Foreign Policy Annual Edition. Dr. Hastedt has published almost thirty articles and chapters, half of which address issues relating to controlling intelligence and problems of surprise in world politics. Other articles deal with arms control issues, and the changing relationship between the president and Congress. He is a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Conflict Studies and serves as national director of Sigma Iota Rho, the international affairs undergraduate honor society. In 1997 he was the College of Arts and Letters Distinguished Teacher. In 1998 he was the College's Madison Scholar.
Kay Monaghan Knickrehm, Professor, received her BA from the University of Georgia and her MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Maryland. She teaches research methods, introduction to political science and Third World politics. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies. Her fields are comparative politics (Third World) and research methods. For the last two years, she has been a project leader for the Humanitarian Demining Information Center at JMU. In addition to research concerning the international consequences of the current landmine crisis, she is involved in a comparative study of public/private distinctions concerning attitudes toward domestic violence.
