The Bittinger Concepts and Applications Series brings proven pedagogy to a new generation of students, with updates throughout to help today’s students learn. Features

  • The Bittinger five-step problem-solving process (Familiarize, Translate, Carry Out, Check, State) appears with every application problem in the text’s examples. Consistent use of this process enables students to tackle with confidence any new word problem they encounter.
  • End-of-chapter Study Summaries are now in a two-column format, with a review of concepts in one column and an appropriate example for each concept in the adjacent column.  The authors use this Study Summary to highlight the most important concepts and terminology from that chapter for easy reference when test time comes around.
  • NEW! Translating for Success problem sets give extra practice with the important "Translate" step of solving word problems. After translating each of ten problems into its appropriate equation or inequality, students are asked to choose from fifteen possible translations, forcing them to comprehend the problem before matching.
  • NEW! Visualizing for Success problem sets ask students to match equations and inequalities with their graphs, allowing them to recognize the important characteristics of the equation and visualize the corresponding attributes of its graph.
  • The Connecting the Concepts have been completely rewritten to synthesize concepts and invite students to pause and see that they understand the “big picture.” This feature is placed at strategic points in each chapter, with Mixed Review Exercises immediately following, to help students maximize their retention of key concepts. As a result, students understand how concepts from several sections work together at once.
  • NEW! “Try” Exercises conclude every example by pointing students to one or more parallel exercises from the corresponding exercise set so that they can immediately reinforce the concepts and skills presented in the examples.
  • Every Chapter Opener has a real-life application that includes real professional testimonial to show how important mathematics is in solving real problems.
  • The Aha! icon in many exercise sets indicates to students that there is a simpler way to complete the exercise without going through a lengthy computation. This icon is used the first time a new insight can be used, and then students determine themselves when to apply that insight on subsequent exercises.
  • Collaborative Corners give students the opportunity to work as a group to solve problems or to apply their knowledge in special activities.
  • Study Skills tips in margins provide suggestions for successful study habits. These recommendations range from time management to test preparation, and can be useful for all college courses.
  • Concept Reinforcement Exercises build students’ confidence and comprehension through True/False, matching, and fill-in-the-blank exercises at the start of each exercise set. When appropriate, special attention is devoted to increasing student understanding of the new vocabulary and notation developed in that section. All answers are included, so that students know exactly where they need extra practice.
  • Student Notes are strategically located in the margins of each section, and offer extra explanations on the mathematics that appear on that page. These remarks are more casual in format than the typical exposition and range from suggestions on how to avoid common mistakes to how to best read new notation.
  • Real data in applications, exercises, and “on-the-job” examples helps increase student interest.

  • The Chapter Test Prep Video CD is included with every new copy of the textbook and contains a video solution of each exercise in the Chapter Tests of the book. This CD-ROM can be an excellent study aid when reviewing for tests.  All videos have optional English subtitles. 
  • Worksheets for Classroom or Lab Practice offer extra practice exercises for every section of the text, with ample space for students to show their work. These lab- and classroom-friendly workbooks also list the learning objectives and key vocabulary terms for every text section, along with vocabulary practice problems.
  • Enhancements to MyMathLab® include the following features:
    • Interactive Translating for Success and Visualizing for Success matching activities help students learn to associate word problems (though translation) and graphs (through visualization) with their appropriate mathematical equations.
    • Translating Word Problems activities help students practice the translation step of solving word problems
    • Concept Videos illustrate the most difficult math topics in a visually appealing and accessible manner.
    • The English/Spanish Audio Glossary allows students to see key mathematical terms and hear their definitions in either English or Spanish.

Content Changes

  • Examples and exercises that use real data are updated or replaced with current applications.
  • More than 35% of the exercises are new or updated.
  • New quick-glance reminders are now included next to multi-step examples to help students follow the overall strategy behind the solution. These appear next to the first multi-step example of each type.
  • In Chapter 2, more emphasis is placed on using the graph of a function to find its domain and range when the function has an infinite domain.
  • Inequalities are now graphed on number lines using brackets and parentheses. Interval notation can thus be read directly from the graph of an inequality.
  • Domains of radical functions are now discussed in Section 4.1, separately from domains of rational functions in Section 4.2.
  • The distance formula is now presented in Section 7.7 as an application of the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • In Chapter 8, discussion of quadratic equations now directly follows the quadratic formula.
