Features

Student-oriented Applications encourage students to see and interpret the mathematics that occur every day by using a wide variety of examples and exercises to connect the mathematical content with the real world.

Objective Boxes are at the beginning of each section. Objectives are keyed by letter to section subheadings; to the exercises in the exercise sets, Summary, and Review; and to the answers to the Chapter Test and Cumulative Review questions. This correlation enables students to easily find appropriate review material if they need help with a particular exercise or skill.

Caution Boxes are found at relevant points throughout the text. These boxes, marked Caution!, warn students of common misconceptions or errors made in performing a particular mathematical operation or skill.

Algebraic-Graphical Connections give students a better visual understanding of algebra by connecting it to a graphical representation.

Calculator Corners are placed where appropriate throughout the text. This optional feature includes scientific-calculator instruction and practice exercises designed specifically for the basic mathematics student.

Diverse Exercises are a strength of all Bittinger texts. The various types of exercises that students will encounter include Discussion and Writing Exercises suitable for individual or group work, Skill Maintenance Exercises that review concepts from other sections, and Synthesis Exercises that require students to combine learning objectives from the current section in addition to preceding text sections.
