Description

A compilation of original readings from a wide range of ideological visions - right, middle, and "unorthodox" - Ideals and Ideologies puts students directly in touch with the thinkers and the ideas that have shaped our world.

This new edition of Ball & Dagger's bestselling reader includes a generous sampling of key thinkers across the various traditions, presented within the intellectual and political context in which the thinkers thought and wrote. This reader is organized to work seamlessly with Ball and Dagger's companion textbook, Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal, together providing rigorous, comprehensive coverage of political ideologies and modern political thought.

Features

  • Each Part covers a major school of political thought, including both standard contemporary political ideologies as well as newly emerging alternatives.
  • Brief introductions and explanatory notes present selections and their authors in their political and historical contexts, making each reading accessible to all students.
  • The best-selling companion text, Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal, provides a historical framework for the readings, and has also been thoroughly revised to reflect new developments in political thinking and movements.

New To This Edition

  • Updated throughout to work seamlessly with its companion textbook, Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal, which has also been thoroughly revised to reflect new developments in political thinking and movements.

NEW READINGS INCLUDE:

  •  W. James Antle, III — The Conservative Crack-up (in Part Four, “Conservatism”)                                                               Antle's essay provides an account of the tensions among American conservatives in recent years.  A conservative himself, Antle worries that the alliance between traditional conservatives, libertarians (or economic conservatives), and neoconservatives (or "neocons") may be coming to an end, with each group pulling in its own direction rather than pulling together to maintain conservative government.
  • Taiaiake Alfred – Indigenist Pathways to Action and Freedom (in Part Eight, "Liberation Ideologies and the Politics of Identity")                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The excerpts from Alfred's essay are a clear but sophisticated statement of the native people's liberation position, or "indigenism."  As a Mohawk teaching at a Canadian university, Alfred draws primarily on the experience of Canada's "first peoples," but he links his analysis to indigenous people and movements in other parts of the globe, including Africa and India, while drawing on scholarly analyses of political power and social movements.
  •  Evangelical Climate InitiativeClimate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action– (in Part Nine, "Green Politics: Ecology as Ideology")                                                                                                                                                                                        "Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action" is an important statement issued in February 2006 by evangelical Christians in response to mounting evidence of global warming.  This essay not only broadens and updates the coverage of environmentalism or "green politics," but it also demonstrates that a concern for the environment is something that people on the political left, right, and center may share.  It marks a novel departure from the monolithic Christian/conservative Right, and demonstrates the emerging diversity within the evangelical Christian community.
  • Sayyid Qutb – Milestones (in Part Ten, "Radical Islam")                                                                                                         Radical Islamism may have forced itself on our attention only in recent years, but it did not begin with Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.  Qutb is one of the most important intellectual influences on today's radical Islamists - the Marx of the radical Islamist movement.  The excerpt from his book, written more than 40 years ago but only recently available in English translation, provides a clear statement of the sources of their radicalism.
