Description

The perfect balance between science and pedagogy.  Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity, 7e examines the rich diversity found in human sexuality and helps students develop their own opinions by promoting critical thinking skills, personal sexual health awareness, and responsible decision-making. Firmly rooted in science, the text systematically encourages students to apply the research to their own lives.

Features

Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity, 7e presents material in a scientific and rigorous manner that also stimulates learning and critical thinking.

Q: Do you favor an active-learning approach in your class? How can you help your students retain more of what they ready?
A: The text employs the PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Review, and Recite) pedagogical method related to the work of educational psychologist Francis P. Robinson to stimulate students to engage the subject matter actively:

  • Preview – An outline of the chapter is found at the beginning of every chapter helps shape students’ expectations.
  • Question – Questions, printed in bold italics and embedded in the body of the text, give students an incentive to read the text and attend class: they want to know the answer to the .
  • Read – Interesting features, such as “Truth or Fiction,” draw students in, encouraging them to read, while the author’s personal writing style holds their interest.
  • Reflect – Found in the margins, “Reflect” questions stimulate elaborative rehearsal and help students focus on what they are learning and how it applies to their lives.
  • Review – At the end of each chapter, review questions (including fill-in-the-blank questions that ask students to produce, not simply recognize the answer) test student understanding of the material they just read.
  • Recite–Found at the end of every chapter, recite questions test student comprehension of the chapter.

Q: Are your students sometimes afraid to ask a question because they think others will think it a “dumb” question?
A: A new feature, SafeZone, features real questions from actual college students, as posed to college instructors throughout the county, accompanied by the authors’ responses. SafeZone both answers some of the unasked questions, and helps students feel more comfortable asking their own questions. Additional SafeZone questions will appear on the book’s companion website.

Q: Do your students enter the course with preconceived ideas about human sexuality?
A: Every chapter opens with a “Truth or Fiction?” quiz that motivates students to challenge common sense, stereotypes, and folklore. Then throughout the chapter “Truth or Fiction Revisited” sections provide feedback to students regarding the accuracy of their assumptions in light of the evidence presented in the chapter.

Q: How aware are your students of the rich variety of human sexual customs and practices that exist outside of their own context?
A: A World of Diversity boxes help students better understand how cultural beliefs, values and attitudes can influence the expression of sexuality, and introduce them to cultural differences related to gender roles, sexual orientation, sexual jealousy, and premarital and extramarital sexual patterns.

Q: How do you encourage your students to take the material in the textbook and relate it to their lives?

  • Self-Assessments, self-scoring questionnaires found throughout the text, stimulate students’ interest and provide self-insight by helping them satisfy their curiosity about themselves.
  • Critical Thinking – Integrated into the margins where appropriate, Critical Thinking boxes ask students to delve deeper into the material and reconsider their own opinions and ideas.
  • Reflect – Also found in the margins, “Reflect” questions stimulate elaborative rehearsal and help students focus on what they are learning and how it applies to their lives.

Q: Are your students looking for concrete and practical applications of the research?
A: A Closer Look boxes provide in-depth discussions of scientific techniques and skill-building exercises such as “Breast Self-Examination,” Self-Examination of the Testes,” and “What to Do If You Suspect You Have Contracted an STD.”

Q: Are your students looking for additional help preparing for exams or writing papers?

A: MyPsychKit (www.mypsychkit.com) is a new online resource that provides a wealth of study tools for students to clarify and deepen their understanding of human sexuality. For each chapter of the Rathus textbook, students can access learning objectives, updated web links to additional sources of information, animations and simulations, videos, glossary flashcard, online practice tests, and Research Navigator, a complete resource for students conducting research assignments and/or writing a research paper.

New To This Edition

The seventh edition of Human Sexuality in a World of Diversity embodies many exciting changes–changes that reflect the rapid developments in the behavioral and social sciences, and in biology and medicine.

  • A new feature, SafeZone, features real questions from actual college students, as posed to college instructors throughout the county, accompanied by the authors’ responses. SafeZone both answers some of the unasked questions, and helps students feel more comfortable asking their own questions. Additional SafeZone questions will appear on the book’s companion website.
  • The already strong coverage of diversity has been strengthened further through the addition of coverage of gay activism, feminist theory, queer theory, Koro and other culture-bound syndromes, hermaphrodites, cross-cultural research on foreplay, sexual fantasies of LBG individuals, maternal and infant mortality from around the world, teen sex around the world, life in blended families, and numerous other examples of the diversity of human sexuality from around the world, including the islands of Mangaia and Inis Beag, Muslim populations in Europe, south central Asia (the Hijira), and Thailand (Ladyboys).
  • MyPsychKit (www.mypsychkit.com) is a new online resource that provides a wealth of study tools for students to clarify and deepen their understanding of human sexuality. For each chapter of the Rathus textbook, students can access learning objectives, updated web links to additional sources of information, animations and simulations, videos, glossary flashcard, online practice tests, and Research Navigator, a complete resource for students conducting research assignments and/or writing a research paper.
  • Critical thinking questions are incorporated into the margins throughout the chapter, to better promote their use.
  • Review questions have been moved to the end of the chapter to make the easier for students to find and use, and to avoid breaking up the flow of the chapter.
  • The authors have added hundreds of new references throughout.
