Description

For courses in Human Sexuality offered at two and four year institutions.

Hock's Human Sexuality, Second Edition, takes an interpersonal approach to human sexuality. The central message of the text is developing and defining one's own sexual philosophy. Every chapter begins with actual student questions from the author's files during nearly 20 years of teaching the human sexuality course. Throughout each chapter the questions are answered and new ones are posed--encouraging students to think critically, analyze, and apply the material in personally relevant ways. Hock takes a psychosocial approach, infused with biological foundations as needed throughout the text. The book focuses on topics that are most critical and of greatest relevance to the students' personal lives and their interactions with others, and on how these topics affect them emotionally, psychologically, and interpersonally. This student-centered approach is incorporated into the text's discussions of all areas of sexuality: psychological, social and biological (including medical issues, sexual health, sexual anatomy and sexual physiology). Sensitivity to diverse groups, not only in terms of race and ethnicity, but also in terms if sexual orientation, age, sexual knowledge, and sexual experience allows all students to feel as comfortable and open about sexual topics as possible.

Features

Interpersonal focus

·    Emphasizes choice, awareness and responsibility that are integral to a planned, proactive, and well-educated sexual philosophy. Presents current and accurate scientific information in a way that is understandable and relevant to the lives of students.

CHOICE

·    Your Sexual Philosophy - Used to help prepare and guide students as they are faced with choices about sexual attitudes and behaviors, or are in a position to advise someone else on sensitive, personal, yet crucial life issues. By knowing who they are, what they want and don't want, and planning ahead, they will be in charge of sexual situations as they arise in their lives instead of the situations being in charge of them.

·    Since You Asked - Each chapter opens with a list of approximately 10 to 15 questions taken from actual anonymous 3 X 5 cards submitted by students. Each question is referenced to a page number in the chapter where the answer and discussion of the issue may be found.

·    Focus on Your Feelings - The study of human sexuality sometimes evokes unexpected or uncomfortable emotional reactions to provocative topics. Focus on Your Feelings is designed to alert students to these possible reactions, reassure them they are normal, and let them know they are not the only ones feeling them.

AWARENESS

·    Self-discovery - Offers students opportunities throughout the text to learn about many of the characteristics that make them unique people, from a sexual perspective. Various examples include self-tests; examination of their sexual preferences and behaviors; enhancing their sexual satisfaction in life; and appreciating the rich diversity of human sexuality.

·    In Touch with Your Sexual Health - Increasing awareness of sexual health is a guiding theme for this book. This frequently recurring feature is present whenever a relevant health issue arises in the text requiring extra attention and explanation. These may involve sexual infections and diseases, disorders in normal functioning of the sexual body, unhealthy aspects of sexual activity and relationships, or sexual issues that may cause psychological or emotional pain or discomfort.

·    Sex is More than Intercourse - This feature reminds you that a wide range of sexual activities besides intercourse can provide sexual intimacy and satisfaction without engaging in risky behaviors.

·    Sexuality and Culture - The world of human sexuality is rich with cultural, sub-cultural, and ethnic diversity. In addition to a multicultural approach to sexuality throughout, chapters will include one or more Sexuality and Culture features that will discuss specific topics from the perspective of diverse cultural practices and customs.

RESPONSIBILITY

·    Evaluating Sexual Research - Feature will occur when issues arise that require students to be critical and skeptical of studies relating to human sexuality, before accepting the results as fact. Through decades of sexual research, findings have been reported that may be based on flawed surveys, research methods, or simply erroneous conclusions, yet they continue to influence people’s ideas and perpetuate myths and misconceptions.  This feature will help you to become a more skilled and analytical consumer of sexual research findings.

·    Sexuality, Ethics, and the Law - Feature is included whenever such issues are relevant to a particular topic in any of the chapters in this text. Examples include the ethical dilemma of informing partners about sexually transmitted infections; laws pertaining to relationship abuse and violence; sodomy laws; the ethics and legal aspects of prostitution; ethical considerations of sex pre-selection in childbirth; and the ethics of castration of child molesters.

·    Have You Considered...? - 6 to 10 questions at the end of each chapter that generally do not have right or wrong answers, but require students to apply the concepts of the chapter to themselves, in a relevant scenario, and decide what they would do. This allows them to think more deeply and, perhaps, more personally, about the material and relate it to their own lives.

·    Historical Perspectives - A brief story that highlights people or events that were significant in the history of the topics discussed in the chapter. These "glimpses of history" are included in the chapters as an enjoyable, relevant, and understandable alternative to an entire, separate chapter on the history of human sexuality.

Reviews

...this is my first semester using this text and I have been pleasantly surprised at the students' ability to read and understand the material as compared to students with similar skills using a different textbook last year. Exam scores are up and I promise you it is not because students suddenly started studying more! ....I really love this text. It is quite different from anything else I've seen, and I've looked at most of the sexuality texts out there.

Callista Lee, Fullerton College

I find Roger Hock's textbook to be the most up-to-date, the most thoroughly researched and visually pleasing of all the Human Sexuality textbooks.

Author Bios

Roger Hock has been teaching psychology for over 20 years and human sexuality for over 15 years. Human sexuality is his favorite class to teach and is consistently one of the most popular among students. He believes that Human Sexuality is an essential course for college students because the topics covered are fundamental to our lives and our identities as humans. He has been known to “declare” that, if he had the power to do so, he would make the human sexuality course a requirement for all undergraduate college and university students. Why? Because the material in this course touches everyone, in countless ways, throughout their lives. But, more importantly, most students, upon entering college as adults, are lacking a correct and current understanding of at least some, if not many, key issues that comprise the complexities of humans as sexual beings. Sex education in grades K-12 is frequently incomplete, inadequate, and even misleading, and not all parents are willing or able to impart the necessary and correct information to their children. Students in higher education clearly need and deserve the knowledge they acquire in this class.
