Mark Zelman, PhD, is Associate Professor of Biology and Chair of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois. A native of Chicago, Mark received his BS in Biology, with minors in Psychology and Chemistry at Rockford College. Mark received his PhD from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Loyola University Chicago, where he studied bacterial and mammalian antigens in a mouse model for human autoimmune disease. Mark was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Chicago, where he studied molecular cell physiology. Before coming to AU, Mark was a biology professor, a college administrator, and a medical writer. Mark pursues a wide range of interests in biology and he is especially interested in enhancing K-12 science education. He enjoys bird-watching and camping with his sons, Joe and Tom, and wears out quite a few shoes training for marathons and triathlons. Mark dedicates the Seventh Edition to Joe and Tom.
Paul Holdaway, MA,a native Hoosier, is a graduate of Indiana State University and was an instructor there for two years. He is currently the senior member of the Biology Department at HarperCollege in Palatine, Illinois, where Dr. Mary Lou Mulvihill was an admired fellow biologist and friend. Dr. Zelman and Dr. Tompary are also former departmental colleagues and longstanding friends. Upon Dr. Mulvihill’s retirement, Professor Holdaway assumed the teaching schedule of Dr. Mulvihill, and he has been involved in the anatomy, physiology, and human disease curriculum since that time. Paul takes pleasure in a wide range of biological and clinical interests, as well as sports and family activities.
Elaine Tompary, PharmD,received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Tompary taught courses in pharmacology, pathophysiology, pharmacy law, and pharmaceutical calculations at William Rainey Harper College and the College of Lake County in Illinois. She has served as mentor and preceptor for pharmacy students at the University of Illinois and Drake University. She currently works for McNeil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals as a manager of medical science and outcomes research. She is a dedicated wife to Drew and mother and teacher to her children, Christopher and Andriana.
Jill Raymond, PhD, received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis. She received and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of California at San Diego, where she studied the parasite Giardia lamblia. She has been teaching for thirteen years at Rock Valley College, Rockford, Illinois. In addition to teaching numerous biology courses, both traditional and on-line, Dr. Raymond teaches a human sexuality course and lectures at community education outreach programs. Dr. Raymond enjoys gardening, working with dogs, and European travel. Dr. Raymond would like to thank her wonderful husband and family for their continuing support through the craziness of writing a textbookBackcover Copy
