This product is an alternate version of:
McWhorter,  Guide to College Reading, 9/E
McWhorter,  Guide to College Reading (with MyReadingLab Student Access Code Card), 8/E

Features

  • Metacognition, critical thinking, and learning styles. Critical thinking and metacognition are hallmarks of the McWhorter series. Critical thinking is incorporated throughout the text in instruction, exercises, and readings. Metacognitive activities include teaching students how to analyze their learning styles so they can develop action plans which increase their ability to read college material successfully.
  • Integration of reading and writing. Exercises throughout the text (and following the selections in the Fiction and Contemporary Issues Minireaders) that ask students to respond by writing sentences and paragraphs after reading help them to understand the critical connection between these two activities.
  • Visual design. The text uses an appealing four-color design, including interactive visual chapter openers. Numerous diagrams and drawings help students visualize how reading material can be organized. High-interest photographs and artwork appeal to visual learners. Interactive chapter summaries are designed to increase student engagement with the text.
  • Chapter "Mastery Tests" (multiple-choice questions that are removable for easy grading) help instructors evaluate student progress in individual skills quickly.
  • Chapter-ending readings integrate and give immediate practice for chapter skills and aid in skill application and transfer to other reading situations.
  • "Learning Style Tips" throughout the book reinforce material introduced earlier and teach students how to apply knowledge of their individual learning styles to learn new skills.

New To This Edition

  • New Contemporary Issues Minireader. Comprising Part Six of the book, the minireader has been revised to include a new section on how to read about controversial issues, and offers six new readings on topics of current interest: smoker’s rights, cell phones and driving safety, campus violence, employee rights, media images of women, and global warming. Each reading begins with prereading questions and a vocabulary preview and is followed by a variety of questions, vocabulary  exercises, and writing assignments designed to increase understanding, promote critical thinking and provide practice with and application of skills.
  • New section on word mapping.  New to Chapter 4, this section teaches students a visual strategy for expanding their vocabularies. Word mapping, which requires students to use a dictionary to analyze a word’s parts and discover alternative meanings and synonyms, as well as to write two sentences using the word, encourages intensive word study. It is particularly helpful for visual learners.
  • New section on online dictionary usage.  Because more students are using online dictionaries, a new section including sample Web pages has been added to Chapter 4. It explains the benefits of these online resources, which can be used to find the definitions of words while reading, to identify correct usage and spelling when writing, and to build and expand general vocabulary.
  • New vocabulary exercises. Each end-of-chapter reading (Mastery Test 4) now features a new exercise, Studying Words, that provides students with practice using a dictionary to find the etymology, correct pronunciation, word parts, and multiple meanings of specific words.
  • New readings. Four new end-of-chapter readings (Mastery Test 4) have been added on the topics of illegal immigration, problems faced by families of soldiers in Iraq, animal cloning of human body parts, and classroom stereotyping. A new contemporary short story by Becky Birtha, “Route 23: Chestnut Hill to 23rd,” has been added to the Fiction Minireader.
  • Technology Advantage. MyReadingLab is the first and only online learning system to diagnose both students' reading skills and reading levels. This remarkable program utilizes diagnostic testing, personalized practice, and gradebook reports to allow instructors to measure student performance and help students gain control over their reading. Specifically created for developmental students, MyReadingLab is a website that provides diagnostics, practice, tests, and reporting on student reading skills and student reading levels.  Student reading skills are improved through a mastery-based format of exercises and tests. Exercises include objective-based questions, open-ended questions, short answer questions, combined skills exercises and more. Student reading level is assessed through a Lexile framework (developed by Metametrics™, an educational measurement expert). Once diagnosed, students are assigned a Lexile number, which indicates their reading comprehension skills, and throughout the program, the Lexile number rises as the students' reading level improves. The result of this skills and level combination is a personalized student study plan to address individual needs and quantifiable data that measures individual student reading level advancement.
