Description

Global Issues, Local Arguments: Readings for Writing features high-interest arguments on significant global issues and emphasizes their connection to students’ lives–all the while developing critical thinking, rhetorical, analysis, synthesis, argumentation, and research skills.

The first argument reader of its kind, Global Issues, Local Arguments: Readings for Writing provides an introduction to analyzing and writing arguments and explores oppositional and nuanced points of view on issues pertaining to globalization: Free Trade, Global Finance and Outsourcing, Immigration, Culture, Water Rights, Alternative Energy Resources, the Global Food Supply, and Human Rights.  Students are asked to make connections between local actions and global issues so that they start to understand how writing can be a tool for learning and an agent of change–relevant and effective both inside and outside of academe.

Conscientious, specific, and plentiful pedagogy introduces each issue, follows each reading, and concludes each chapter, continually asking students to break down and compare rhetorical argument strategies in use.  Thoughtful writing prompts build from brief, informal writing assignments toward more comprehensive and formal rhetorical analyses and researched arguments.

Features

  • High-interest readings explore and argue nine of today’s global issues, requiring students to investigate problems they likely have not previously considered.  Readings are balanced in terms of political perspective, length, level, and genre and appeal to students with diverse academic interests and majors.
  • Students must practice and strengthen critical thinking skills in order to examine the background and big picture of an issue, engage multiple perspectives, consider the ways these positions are defended by invested stakeholders, and synthesize salient points into their own arguments.
  • Argument is presented as a method of inquiry and problem-solving as well as a means of persuasion:
        • For Class Discussion questions after each reading ask students to locate the argument’s rhetorical strategies.
        • Chapter Questions for Reflection and Discussion at the end of each chapter asks students to generate inter-textual connections.
  • Well-crafted, specific, and substantial apparatus at the end of each chapter offers a range of writing opportunities:
        • Brief Writing Assignments present pre-writing ideas and writing-to-learn suggestions that prepare students for longer essays and arguments.
        • Writing Projects promote longer and more formal analysis and synthesis essays, arguments using different types of claims, and researched arguments.
  • Writing is shown to be an active, productive instrument that can build communities and bring about change:
        • Possible Writing Projects at the end of each chapter promote involvement in the community by emphasizing students’ roles as citizens, voters, and consumers.
  • Chapter Introductions encourage students to connect personally with an important global issue.  Each chapter opens situating the consequence of a global concern in a local community and asks students to consider the ways that local decisions fuel global concerns.
        • Student Voice, a short and experiential student-authored piece, shows a student’s personal connection to the issue.
        • International Voice and Global Hot Spot both personalize a global issue by using a particular person, family, or community as a brief case study.
  • Global Issues, Local Arguments: Readings for Writing provides extensive assistance for teachers and students exploring new content areas and includes a Glossary, lists of related documentary and fictional films, a world map, and a generous bibliography.
  •

    New To This Edition

    • A new chapter on Analyzing and Writing Arguments teaches students key rhetorical elements of argument, how to summarize an argument, how to write a rhetorical analysis, and how to write an argument.  Students learn the skills the read the arguments in the anthology and enter the conversations with their own writing (Ch. 2).
    • Over 60 professional readings are new to this edition and represent multiple genres, diverse stakeholders, and current global and local developments.  Engaging new topics include controversies over the disposal of electronic waste (cell phones, computer monitors, and televisions), possible energy technologies, crossover films from Bollywood, and the advantages of local food.
    • New chapter on the global financial crisis explores how global economic forces affect students and their families through job losses, mortgage foreclosures, credit card defaults, and employment prospects for graduates, ensuring that students make connections between global and local actions (Ch. 4).
    • The addition of student essays provides models of rhetorical analysis, personal narrative, and researched argument, among others.  Researched arguments demonstrate topics, angles, and strategies explored by students’ peers as well as model citation in MLA style.
    • New focus for the environment chapter moves this chapter beyond causal arguments on climate change to proposals for the development of sustainable energy technologies (Ch. 6).
    • New emphasis on rhetorical analysis includes one major “Analyzing Arguments Rhetorically” writing project in every chapter as well as one or more shorter projects in the Brief Writing Projects in each chapter helps students practice a range of critical thinking skills and increases instructor flexibility.
    • A greater focus on music, television, and film in the global culture chapter uses high-interest topics such as rap music, MTV, and Slumdog Millionnaire to raise some of the issues surrounding the globalization of culture (Ch. 8).
    • Updated presentation of globalization theory and a new Global Pursuit quiz ensures students’ reading is informed by cutting edge ideas and current statistics and facts (Ch. 1).
