Description

Get It Together is a thematically-organized reader that focuses on issues and events that concern African Americans and promotes critical thinking about how these issues impact the lives of all Americans.

An underlying notion of the book is that the key issues for African Americans have not substantially changed through American history. The readings were chosen to assert a need for initiative on the part of the student writer and encourage change through analysis, research, discussion, and involvement. Students are presented with the opportunity to formulate their own initiatives to “get it together.”

Features

This thematically-organized reader provides exposure to the problems that have made African Americans both unique to and at the same time representative of American culture.

Includes a wide variety of readings in each chapter—primarily non-fiction—that illustrate the experiences of African Americans.

Chapters are anchored by 1 or 2 readings that give an historic perspective on the chapter's overall topic. Anokye and Brice-Finch believe that readers better understand contemporary, often systemic, issues when the history of these issues is also included.

Each chapter includes readings from a range of time periods—an historical essay from mid to late 19th century, writings from early to mid 20th century, and pieces found in current periodicals and literary sources.

Selections are by well-known African American figures such as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Malcolm X - and by some more contemporary writers such as Geneva Smitherman, James McBride, and even Johnnie Cochran, Jr.

Brief chapter introductions foreground the key questions raised by the reading selections in that chapter.

Author notes precede each reading.

Chapters concludes with a list of suggested films, recordings, and other multimedia selections that supplement the readings.
