Description

Frederic (“Ric”) Martini, now joined by accomplished educator and award-winning teacher Judi Nath as his new co-author, builds on his best-selling text by making the Eighth Edition the most student-focused and the easiest to use of all editions yet published. Student-focused elements include new chapter-opening Learning Outcomes, new sentence-style chapter headings that not only introduce new topics but also teach, and a new and simple Tips & Tricks feature that gives students easy analogies and mnemonic devices to help them remember information. The award-winning art program has been enhanced with more deeply contrasting colors and more dimensionality.

Every student book is automatically packaged with Martini’s Atlas of the Human Body, the Interactive Physiology® (IP) 10-System Suite CD-ROM (including the brand-new and eagerly-awaited 10th module on the Immune System), and access to the dramatically upgraded myA&Pcompanion website. Convenient references in the chapters of the book to the Atlas, IP-10, and myA&P help students seamlessly integrate each component into their study routine. In addition to IP-10 and myA&P, the enhanced media offerings for this edition include the new 3D Anatomy Animations with Gradable Quizzes, the new 3D Animations of Origins, Insertions, Actions, and Innervations with Gradable Quizzes, and Media Manager 2.1 featuring an easy-to-use “shopping cart” feature. The Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL)  2.0 media program that was immediately embraced by students and instructors upon its publication is available as an optional priced package item.

Package Components

  • Martini’s Atlas of the Human Body
  • NEW! Interactive Physiology (IP) 10-System Suite CD-ROM
  • Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Eighth Edition

Features

Award-winning art and photo program:

  • “Side-by-Side” Figures provide students with multiple views of the same structure or tissue, typically pairing an artist's drawing with a cadaver photograph taken by renowned biomedical photographer Ralph Hutchings. This approach allows students to compare the illustrator's rendering with a photo of the actual structure as it may be seen in the laboratory or operating room.
  • “Step-by-Step” Figures break down multifaceted processes into numbered step-by-step illustrations that coordinate with the authors’ narrative descriptions. These easy-to-follow sequences in the book are also featured on the Media Manager (with a “Step Edit” function) for instructors to use in classroom presentations.
  • “Macro-to-Micro” Figures help students bridge the gap between familiar and unfamiliar structures of the body by sequencing anatomical views from whole organs or other structures to their smaller parts. A typical illustration might combine a simple orientation diagram (indicating where an organ or structure is located in the human body) with a large, vivid illustration of that organ or other structure, a corresponding sectional view, and a photomicrograph.
  • “Navigator” Figures are ”big picture” overviews that appear at the start of discussions of complex physiological processes and re-appear as needed to help students follow the process. Similar to a roadmap with a highlighted path, “Navigator” Figures re-appear as needed to help break the process into clear, highly visual, easy-to-follow steps.

Time-saving navigation tools:

  • Interactive Physiology® (IP) references appear in the end-of-chapter Study Outline and show students which IP topics (on the IP CD-ROM packaged with their new book and on the myA&Pcompanion website) can help them review key chapter material.
  • Concept Links, signaled with blue chain link icons, alert students to material that is related to, or builds upon, previous discussions. Each link refers students to a page number for quickly reviewing the relevant material from an earlier chapter.
  • End-of-chapter 3-level learning system helps build student confidence and understanding through a logical progression from factual questions (Level 1) to conceptual problems (Level 2) to analytical exercises (Level 3). The variety of question-types also gives instructors flexibility in assigning homework from the text. The 3-level learning system is carried through to the chapter quizzes on the myA&P companion website and to the chapters of the print Study Guide.

New To This Edition

  • Learning Outcomes are chapter-opening numbered lists that indicate to students what they should be able to do after studying the chapter.  Educators have begun to shift from “objectives” to more concrete “learning outcomes,” and this feature keeps pace with this educational trend.
  • Sentence-style chapter headings do more than introduce new topics: They state the core fact or concept that will be presented in the section.  These numbered chapter headings are directly correlated to the numbered Learning Outcomes on the chapter-opening page.  The two elements together help students “see,” navigate through, and learn the chapter content.
  • Tips & Tricks boxes are very brief and concrete learning tools that give students simple analogies and easy mnemonic devices to help them remember facts and concepts.
  • The A&P Top 100 boxes, interspersed throughout the narrative, include the core facts and concepts necessary to understanding the basics of anatomy & physiology.
  • An increased number of Clinical Notes present relevant clinical information througout the text. Those embedded in the narrative deal with pathologies and their relation to normal physiological function, while the larger boxed versions address important medical or social topics. An increased number of Clinical Notes—averaging three per chapter—focus on various topics, ranging from scoliosis to delayed-onset muslce soreness.
  • An improved art program makes an already beautiful and vivid collection of images more dramatic with increased color contrast and dimensionality in the illustrations together with 75 new illustration-over-photo images.
  • Clear and bright tabs, now broken down by both unit and body system, make the text easier to navigate.
  • An enhanced media package features:
    • NEW!  The Interactive Physiology (IP) 10-System Suite, which now includes the eagerly-awaited 10th module on the Immune System.  IP-10 appears on the CD-ROM packaged with the book, the myA&P companion website, and as PowerPoint® IP Slides in on the Media Manager.
    • NEW!  50 3D Anatomy Animations with Gradable Quizzes, which help students understand muscle and joint actions.  These animations appear on the myA&P companion website and on the Media Manager.
    • NEW! 65 3D Animations of Origins, Insertions, Actions, and Innervations, with Quizzes are viewable as a student studies, reviews and hears the name of each individual muscle. These animations appear on the myA&P companion website and on the Media Manager.

    • UPGRADED!  Media Manager 2.1, which organizes all instructor media resources by chapter into one convenient and easy-to-use package. Featured are customizable images of all of the illustrations from the textbook, all of the photos and tables from the textbook, all images from Martini’s Atlas of the Human Body, all animations listed above, PowerPoint Lecture Outlines including text, art, and animations, PRS-enabled Active Lecture (“Clicker”) Questions, and PRS-enabled Quiz-Game chapter reviews.
    • REVISED! The myA&P companion website, which now includes Chapter Guides that let users see at a glance what content is available for each chapter, improved Chapter Quizzes that now include art-based labeling items, improved Chapter Practice Tests, a Gradebook, the new Interactive Physiology (IP) 10-System Suite, the new 3D Anatomy Animations with Gradable Quizzes, the new 3D Animations of Origins, Insertions, Actions, and Innervations with Gradable Quizzes, Get Ready for A&P, and much more.  For instructors who want course management functionality, myA&P with CourseCompass is available, and student access kits can be added to student packages for no additional charge.
    • NEW!  VangoNotes, which is an audio study guide that offers 25-30 minutes of review per chapter on tough topics.  This audio study guide can be purchased by the chapter or in full at: www.vangonotes.com
    • NEW!  Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL) 2.0, which is an interactive, visually engaging study and lab assessment tool that gives students 24/7 access to a rich array of anatomy lab specimens.  This media program can be added to the book package for an additional charge.

Author Bios

Dr. Frederic (Ric) Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. His publications include journal articles and contributed chapters, technical reports, and magazine articles. He is the lead author of six other undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, and has a feature column, “Back to Basics,” in Physician License and Practice Today, a quarterly publication for medical students and residents. He is currently affiliated faculty of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and remains connected with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini has been active in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for 15 years, and was a member of the committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is now a President Emeritus of HAPS after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2004—2007. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Australia/New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Hawaii Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists.

Dr. Judi L. Nath is a professor of Biology and Health Sciences at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology. After receiving her bachelor’s degrees in biology and German from Bowling Green State University, she continued on at Bowling Green to earn her master’s degree and her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. Dr. Nath is devoted to her students and strives to convey the intricacies of science in a captivating way that students find meaningful, interactive, and exciting. She won Lourdes’ “Faculty Excellence” award, granted by the college to recognize her effective teaching, scholarship, and community service. Dr. Nath has also served as biology department chair. Being a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) is one of her passions, and she has been elected to office twice and has served on several committees, including the Curriculum and Instruction Committee, which was charged with developing outcomes that match the prescribed curriculum standards established by HAPS. She also holds professional memberships in the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), the Society for College Science Teaching (SCST), and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She is the sole author of Using Medical Terminology: A Practical Approach (published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins), the first book to use a “foreign language/total immersion” approach to teaching medical terminology within the context of applied anatomy and physiology. Dr. Nath has also written ancillary materials, including lecture outlines and test items, for several Martini A&P textbooks. In her spare time Judi takes pleasure in bicycling, playing piano, and enjoying life with her husband, Mike, and their dogs.
