Description

For freshman/sophomore, 1 or 2-semester or 2—3 quarter courses covering topics in college algebra and finite mathematics for students in business, economics, social sciences, or life sciences departments.

This book presents the content and applications in an accessible manner while maintaining an appropriate level of rigor. The authors proceed from familiar material to new, and from concrete examples to general rules and formulas. This edition retains its focus on real-world problem solving, but has been refreshed with a wealth of new data in the examples and exercises–42% of the 452 examples are new or revised, and 31% of the 3,741 exercises are new or revised. The Table of Contents lends itself to tailoring the course to meet the specific needs of students and instructors.

Features

  • A balanced approach includes multiple representations of a topic (symbolic, numerical, graphical, verbal), which are used where appropriate throughout the text.
  • Real-Data Examples and Applications have long been popular features of this text, and this edition is no exception. The data has been updated and added to throughout the text.
  • Examples are plentiful (452 in all), carefully constructed, and referenced within the first part of the homework exercises (e.g., “See Example 1”) so that students get off to a good start.
  • Checkpoint Exercises (formerly referred to as “side problems”), are keyed to the examples in the text and provide students with an opportunity to practice immediately after learning a new skill. The Checkpoints essentially function as a complete, in-text study guide helping students gauge their level of understanding and improve their confidence before moving on.
  • Caution notes highlight common student difficulties or warn against frequently made mistakes.
  • Technology Tips appear within the text as appropriate to inform students of various features of their graphing calculators or spreadsheet programs and to guide them in using these tools.
  • Exercises at the end of each section provide students with a valuable opportunity to practice the material that they have just learned in the chapter. The first part of the exercises is referenced to specific examples (e.g., “See Example 1”) to help students at the beginning of assignments. In addition to the skill and application-based exercises, there are also exercises that require writing, the use of the calculator, skills from earlier sections, or are tied to professional exams.
  • End of Chapter materials include a summary of key terms, symbols, and concepts, followed by a comprehensive set of Review Exercises.
  • Case Studies appear at the end of each chapter, providing an extended real-world application of some of the mathematics presented in the chapter.

New To This Edition

  • Examples: Of the 452 examples in the text, 18% are new and 24% have been revised. Updates have focused on incorporating user feedback and updating real-world data.
  • Exercises: Of the 3,741 exercises in the text, 19% are new and 12% have been revised. Again, updates have focused on incorporating feedback from users and updating real-world data.
  • Checkpoint exercises in the margins (formerly referred to as “side problems”) have been relabeled, and the answers to the exercises have been relocated from directly below each exercise to the end of the each section (to discourage students from simply working backwards from the answer).
  • Real-World Examples are now clearly marked and carry titles corresponding to those used in the exercise sets (Business, Finance, Health, Social Sciences, etc.)
  • Case Studies: Three of these are new and several others have been updated.

Content Updates

  • Chapter 5, Mathematics of Finance, has been substantially rewritten to introduce material that plays a significant role in today’s business environment. It includes new material on treasury bills, corporate bonds, zero-coupon bonds, pension distributions, bond pricing, and annuities due. The discussion of the present value of an annuity has been completely redone so that the topic is more accessible.
  • The first sections of Chapter 6, Systems of Linear Equations and Matrices, have been expanded to three. Systems of two equations in two variables are now in a section by themselves–to address both those instructors who want to omit this discussion and proceed directly to larger systems, and those who requested expanded coverage of this topic. Both the elimination method and the Gauss-Jordan method for solving large systems of equations are now in the same section, since many instructors prefer to get to the Gauss-Jordan method as soon as possible. Finally, an entire section is devoted to applications of systems of equations.
  • Discussion of frequency probability has been moved from Section 8.4 to 8.3 at the request of a number of users.
  • Chapter 10, Introduction to Statistics, includes a number of user-requested changes. The first section has been split into two to give separate treatment to two important topics–Section 10.1 has an expanded discussion of frequency distributions and Section 10.2 covers measures of central tendency.

Author Bios

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

Thomas W. Hungerford received his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He taught for many years at the University of Washington (Seattle) before moving to Cleveland State University in 1980. He has been at St. Louis University since 2003. He has written a number of research articles in algebra and several in mathematics education. Dr. Hungerford is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen mathematics textbooks, ranging from high school to graduate level, several of which are published by Addison-Wesley. He is active in promoting the effective use of technology in mathematics instruction. Dr. Hungerford has also been a referee and reviewer for various mathematical journals and has served on National Science Foundation panels for selecting grant recipients.

John P. Holcomb, Jr. received his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University and his Ph.D. from the University at Albany, State University of New York. He taught for five years at Youngstown State University prior to arriving at Cleveland State University in Fall 2000. He is an associate professor and frequently collaborates with researchers in a variety of disciplines where he provides statistical analysis. Dr. Holcomb has also authored several papers in statistical education and is very active in the American Statistical Association and the Mathematical Association of America. He was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and in 2003 received the Waller Award from the American Statistical Association for outstanding teaching of introductory statistics.
