Description
A “tried and true” favorite of both students and instructors alike, this text offers extremely readable coverage of the principles of finite mathematics and their applications in business, social science, and the life sciences. Topics are presented in a straightforward, interesting manner, with considerable attention given to the applications of the mathematics. The goal is for the students' mathematical maturity and appreciation for the usefulness of mathematics to grow simultaneously. Many sections contain specially designed technology exercises.
Features
An abundance of carefully designed exercise sets:
– Features more than 2200 exercises, usually arranged in the order in which the text proceeds (so that homework assignments may be made easily after only part of a section is discussed).
– Interesting applications and more challenging problems tend to be located near the ends of the exercise sets.
– Supplementary exercises at the end of each chapter amplify the other exercise sets and provide cumulative exercises that require skills acquired from earlier chapters. Answers to the odd-numbered exercises are included at the back of the book.
• Real-life applications – Illustrates the uses of finite mathematics in other disciplines, and, wherever possible, uses applications to motivate the mathematics.
• Examples – Includes many more worked examples than is customary, and includes computational details.
• Practice Problems – At the end of each section, just before the exercise set. Complete solutions follow the exercise sets.
• Examples from professional exams:
– Includes multiple-choice questions (labeled PE) similar to those found on CPA, GMAT, and GRE Economics exams.
– Performance on these exams is key to students entering professional and graduate programs. Familiarity with the exams may result in better performance.
New To This Edition
• 20% REVISED and/or NEW exercises. Updated real-world data throughout.
• Over20% of the Examples have been revised and/or updated and all Examples are labeled to make them more easily identifiable.
• Circled exercises – When the number for an exercise is circled, the complete solution of the exercise is given in the back of the book. This gives students additional guidance and support working exercises.
• Conceptual Exercises – These challenging exercises probe fundamental concepts, often involve verbalization of ideas, and usually do not have a numerical answer.
• Key Formulas –A new section has been added near the end of each chapter that presents the formulas developed in the chapter. Provides a handy overview for students of the important mathematical notation.
• Calculator Upgrade – Although graphing calculators are optional, many students have calculators from high school. The discussion of the use of calculators has been upgraded by including the TI-89 along with the previous discussion on the use of the TI-83. The material on the TI-82 has been removed.
• Logic Circuits – A section on logic circuits has been added to the logic chapter.
