Features

For Undergraduate Introduction to Management Information Systems courses.

Flexible modules for instructors, real-world lessons for students.

In the 21st Century, every business professional must be able to effectively use information systems, and the latest edition of Experiencing MIS prepares students to do just that. Compiled in a modular and question-based format, this text teaches students how information systems are used to solve business problems.

The second edition explores the emerging topics in IS and focuses on the increasing impact these topics will have on student’s lives and future careers.

Modular-Format: This text is divided into 12 chapters and 21 chapter extensions. By having the basic information contained in the core chapters, instructors can tailor the chapter extensions into the material to fit their course. In addition, no chapter relies on the student reading the previous chapter which gives instructors added flexibility to cover material in the order they choose.

Question-based Format: Questions at the beginning of most chapter sections  direct students to the material on which they should focus their attention. The Active Review at the end of each chapter and chapter extension provides students with an active assignment to check their understanding. When students can correctly answer each of these questions, they know that they have learned the main point of the section and can move on.

NEW! “How-to” Collaboration Coverage:  Team projects and collaboration are vital to business education and success. This is the first book that helps students learn how to collaborate effectively and explains the various collaborative information systems. “How-to” information and exposure is featured throughout the text in:

  • MIS in Use cases that lead to a collaboration exercise at the end of each chapter.
  • Two Chapter Extensions on Collaboration: These two extensions feature collaboration techniques and collaboration information systems, respectively.
  • SharePoint Access for Adopters: Encourage collaboration in your own classroom with SharePoint—Microsoft’s collaboration system that allows you to facilitate collaboration. See “Supplements” for more information on how to use SharePoint in your course.

NEW! Beginner-based Business Process Management Focus: Students need to know how information systems can improve the effectiveness of business processes and this text does so by keeping in mind that students have very little business experience. The following aims to make the task of teaching business process management easier:

  • Chapter 7—Re-write: By focusing exclusively on business process management this chapter now includes an example from Majestic River Ventures, BPM notation, and has three corresponding chapter extensions.
  • Majestic River Ventures (MRV) Case with Video Supplement: Students see first-hand the consequences of a process problem that alienates the demanding customer.
  • Supporting Materials: For extended practice for students, simulations, a free and interactive game, and other business process management templates are available.

NEW! Web 2.0 in Business: Chapter 8 now covers important topics such as social networking and user-generated content in which students learn the pros and cons of emerging technologies and are encouraged to think innovatively about these topics in their future careers.

Thought-Provoking Chapter Guides: Each chapter features two unique guides focused on the issues in information systems that are currently most relevant. These guides encourage students to explore different topics and stimulate class discussions on issues that they may face in the real-world, including ethics.

NEW! Chapter Opening Cases and Videos: The chapter opening cases and videos set up the chapter’s content by providing an obvious example of why the subsequent information is relevant to the real-world. Cases include:

  • Dee Clarke from Emerson Pharmaceuticals—This fictitious character and company show students how important IS literacy is for every business professional.  Students follow Dee and her attempts to set-up a company blog over the course of Part I & II.
  • Majestic River Ventures—The example of this small river rafting company that insufficiently protects its information systems and looses important data as a result, brings MIS down from the clouds and makes its relevance real for today’s student.

NEW! Excel and Access Integration: Five chapter extensions are included in this text that allow instruction in Access and Excel without having students purchase a separate text.

NEW MyMISLAB — Coming in June, and based on Pearson’s MyITLab technology, MyMISLab helps you support and evaluate your students’ MS skills for the MIS course.  Using a hands-on format, MyMISLab works students through core technologies such as Excel and Access for MIS helping them understand the basics, and assessing their skill level.  In addition, MyMISLab will also provide Sharepoint support and class space, as well as other project specific resources to help support and enrich your class and classroom experience.

The International Dimension: Every part concludes with a relevant module on the international aspects of MIS. By touching upon important international issues students will be able to transfer their knowledge from the textbook to future international business experiences.

Consider Your Net Worth: Activities titled, “Using Your Knowledge” and “Consider Your Net Worth” are incorporated at the close of each chapter, and part, and encourage students to transfer the insight they gained into a business setting or situation.

End-of-Chapter Case Study:  At the end of each chapter students will be presented with an opportunity to reflect on how the use of the technology or systems presented in the chapter will effect a real organization.
