Description
For undergraduate introductory psychology courses at both two-year and four-year schools.
The most learner-centered and assessment-driven text available.
Praised for a very engaging writing style, comprehensive coverage of key research, and strong pedagogical features, Ciccarelli focuses on getting students to actually read their textbook. Using the recommended APA undergraduate psychology learning outcomes, the authors establish clear learning objectives for students and tie the text assessment to these objectives. Student and instructor feedback from an extremely successful first edition emphasize the appeal of Ciccarelli's approach to teaching and learning in today's classroom.
This product accompanies:

Psychology, 2/E
Features
Prologue: To capture interest immediately, a chapter opening story, or Prologue, is included.
Learning Objectives: UPDATED, based on APA assessment guidelines, each chapter is organized around detailed learning objectives. For the second edition we have streamlined the number of learning objectives per chapter (average chapter has fifteen objectives). The objectives in all chapters have been re-worded to help students move beyond a factual understanding, to one where they must apply what they know (“Explain”, “Identify”, “Compare and Contrast”). These objectives start every chapter, and appear within the content of the chapter where they are addressed (see page 48).
Student Voice Questions: Designed to help students develop their critical thinking and communication skills, these Student Voice questions which appear in the margin and guide the narrative encourage students to ask questions. Using conversational tone, which helps students relate to the concepts and keeps their interest, these questions represent the many student questions the authors have encountered in their own classroom. The questions have been written and reviewed by students, and NEW to the second edition all students featured used the first edition of Ciccarelli to master their introductory psychology class.
NEW Section Concept Maps: Concept mapping is one of the assessment tools recommended by the APA. Instructors and students responded that the end-of-chapter concept maps helped as a visual summary and requested that this helpful learning aid be expanded in the second edition. Now, each chapter section provides a more detailed section level map. This detailed concept map allows students to delve deeper into specific content areas and provides them with multiple opportunities to test their mastery of the chapter concepts presented.
Practice Quiz: How Much Do You Remember? Appears after each major segment of material within the chapter. A longer practice test, Test Yourself, appears at the end of each chapter. NEW Brainstorming critical thinking questions have been added to the Practice Quizzes section. All of these test materials consist of multiple-choice questions. Since most instructors test using multiple choice and students often have a difficult time understanding these types of questions, this opportunity for practice boosts student confidence and performance.
NEW See/Hear/Learn/Explore/Practice More icons: An exciting brand new feature developed with feedback from students and instructors is the NEW See/Hear/Learn/Explore/Practice More.. The icons are integrated into the text and lead to web-based expansions on topics, allowing instructors and students access to extra information, videos, podcasts and simulations. For example, Chapter Two offers two See More links–the first links to a video classic clip of Wilder Penfield (p. 65), the second to a video enhanced podcast showcasing the surface anatomy of a real human brain (p. 72); the Learn More links in Chapter 2 provide students with more information about Cajal’s influence and discoveries (p. 49), as well as more detail on right and left handedness (p.79); the Hear More links to a podcast of Psychology in the News (p.60) as well as an audio file of a reading of the chapter (p. 83), the Explore More links to a simulation on neurons (p. 51), as well as a simulation on lower brain structures (p. 70); and finally the Practice More links to on-line practice tests and quizzes (p. 86).
Throughout each chapter, when a topic has a relationship to one in another chapter, a symbol is provided, with instructions for the student to look at the related topic. The LINK feature is a great resource for students who often struggle with seeing the “big picture” of psychology and how all the related fields of psychology relate to one another. (for an example see p. 62).
Running Glossary: A running glossary of psychology terms is absolutely necessary to engage students in the material right were it exists. The terms are in bold and defined in the margins. There is a full-text glossary at the end of the text.
Difficult Terms: For many ESL students some general vocabulary terms are difficult. A lack of vocabulary can be a big stumbling block for manystudents. In this text, these more difficult vocabulary terms are defined at the bottom of the page on which they first appear. This is a feature that no other introductory text includes. (For an example see p. 76 “fastidious” is defined at the bottom of the page)
Each chapter also contains other special sections which cover interesting topics related to the chapter material, especially topics of diversity and cultural interest. This content is not set off from the text in boxes—it is part of the narrative and therefore it is more likely that students will read the enriching material. Practice quizzes and the tests at the end of each chapter include questions on this material, further encouraging students to read. For example, in one Psychology in the News feature there is a discussion of stem cells. In another section called Classic Research in Psychology, the experiment on learned phobias “Little Peter” conducted by psychologist Mary Cover Jones is discussed (with on-line footage provided of the classic “Little Albert” study).
At the end of every chapter, a section called Applying Psychology to Everyday Life takes something from the chapter and relates it to the real world. For example, in Chapter One research on the negative impact of the athlete stereotype of the “dumb jocks” on college test performance is highlighted. In Chapter Two, mirror neurons are presented. Each special section is followed by questions that are intended to stimulate discussion and critical thinking processes.
Chapter Summary: A detailed Chapter Summary, organized by the inclusion of the learning objective questions in the appropriate sections, is also a must and the final step in surveying the chapter for students using the SQ3R. This summary hits all the important parts of the chapter, almost like the student’s own notes. End of chapter visual summaries are also included—reinforcing all the major objectives of the chapter.
