Description

During the twenty-first century, social workers will increasingly use evidence-based knowledge to plan, implement, and evaluate the quality of their own professional activities; this book helps students develop the skills needed for evidence-based social work (EBSW).

This book emphasizes the importance of applied practice, critical thinking, and self-directed, lifelong learning. Students learn the fundamentals of the EBSW skills, practice them to establish beginning proficiency, and then apply them to a target client group of their choosing. Students will learn to search for, discover, critically analyze, and apply evidence of “what works” in service to clients.

Features

  • Emphasizes skill development in a step-by-step, user-friendly fashion. Each chapter contains clear descriptions and examples as well as exercises that allow students to practice the EBSW skills.
  • Completion of the exercises throughout the book results in a Practice Effectiveness Evidence Report (PEER) that is essentially a scholarly research paper leading to the identification and description of an evidence-based best practice for service to a targeted client group (i.e., members of a special population affected by a contemporary social problem).
  • Students learn to analyze scholarly information that pertains to their clients, and the problems and issues their clients face. This knowledge will help them keep up with most current research—which becomes even more important when they get out in the field (Ch. 4 and throughout).
  • Shows students how to evaluate the effectiveness of their own practice and develop a passion for finding and using best practices that are (a) supported by evidence of effectiveness, (b) informed by practice experience, and (c) consistent with clients' personal and cultural values.
  • Searching skills helps students learn how to search online library catalogs, bibliographic databases, evidence-based collections, governmental resources, and World Wide Web resources (Ch. 3).
