This is a provocative, reflective book about how American anthropologists study Europe. But, since anthropology has traditionally been defined as a field that studies the non-western, exotic Other, an anthropological study of Europe would appear to be a misnomer. In a larger sense, then, it offers insights into the manner in which ideas emerge and evolve within a discipline. The book is composed of fourteen essays by twelve anthropologists who address how, when, where, and why they first began to study Europe and the implications of those studies for the development of anthropology in general.

• Examines “Europe” as an idea that has played many roles in the history of American anthropology.

• Offers a history of the “anthropology of Europe” as told by twelve American anthropologists who have each studied Europe for more than twenty years.

• Provides case studies of doing anthropology in a range of countries and regions throughout Europe, including France (Rogers); Greece (Dubisch, Hoffman); Italy (Kertzer); Portugal (Brettell); among the Basques (Douglass); Ireland (Wilson); former Yugoslavia (Bennett); Eastern Europe (Kideckel); and the European Union (Wilson).

• Discusses the study of particular themes in the anthropology of Europe: the relationship of anthropology to other disciplines (Rogers, Parman); defining center and periphery (Dubisch, Kideckel); the study of migration (Brettell, Douglass); urban anthropology (Kertzer); and how to study Europe at regional, national, and supra-national levels (Wilson).

• Reviews important films frequently used to teach courses on the anthropology of Europe (Allen) and tells the story of the making of the film “Kypseli” (Hoffman).
