Description

Essentials of Human Communication fills the need for a brief, interesting, but serious text that places a strong focus on skill development. In-text features and the text itself highlight the application of human communication skills to the real world and to the workplace. This top-selling text presents the fundamental skills of interpersonal, small group, and public communication, emphasizing the areas of human communication skills, cultural awareness, listening, critical thinking, ethics, power and empowerment, media literacy, and computer-mediated communication.

Features

  • Critical thinking principles are integrated into the text and in the marginal questions, self-tests, and box scenarios.
  • Strong emphasis on skills is integrated throughout the text in the end of chapter “Summary of Concepts and Skills,” and in the skills-development exercises, which emphasize the application of specific communication skills.
  • Cultural issues are fully integrated within the text to promote cultural sensitivity and understanding while developing skills to effectively understand students' own cultural beliefs and values. Every chapter addresses cultural issues.
  • Helpful boxed features are included to raise awareness about current communication issues, enhancing students' understanding and application of communication and allowing them to enrich their experience in the course:
    • “Listen to This” boxes apply listening principles to the chapter topic and ask students to offer suggestions for a variety of listening situations.
    • “Communicating Ethically” boxes present real-life ethical issues and ask the student, “What Would You Do?” to respond to the issue at hand.
    • “Self-Test” boxes include two series of questions—“How Did You Do?” and “What Will You Do?” to provide students an assessment of their skills while prompting them to use this analysis to improve their skills in these key areas of communication.
  •  “What Do You Say?” marginal items in each chapter pinpoint specific, real-life scenarios, giving students an opportunity to think through a situation and develop appropriate responses.
  • “E-Talk” marginal items discuss the differences between computer-mediated and face-to-face communication and inquire into  students' experiences with these forms of human communication.
  • The text's glossary is presented in two parts, with one focusing on key concepts and the other focusing on key skills to highlight skill development.
  • Workplace-related examples appear throughout and emphasize the immediate value of communication skills to students' lives. Topics include issues such as mentoring relationships, networking, office romance, and workplace groups.
  • “Five for Discussion” questions at the end of each chapter are designed to raise a variety of issues in human communication for class discussion, journal writing, or essay writing.
  • “Key Word Quiz” features at the end of each chapter, now presented as matching-columns tests, help review the significant vocabulary terms introduced in the chapter.

New To This Edition

  • MyCommunicationLab: Where effective communication begins!  An interactive and instructive online solution, MyCommunicationLab is designed to be used as a supplement to a traditional lecture course, or completely administer an online course. Students benefit from a wealth of video clips that include student and professional speeches, small group scenarios, and interpersonal interactions-- some with running commentary and critical questions –all geared to help students learn to communicate with confidence. URL: http://www.mycommunicationlab.com  (Access code required)  This text's MyCommunicationLab premium website offers over 90 interactive exercises and self-tests written by the author for students to apply and enhance the skills they have studied in the text. These resources can be found at www.mycommunicationlab.com and are referenced at the end of each chapter.
  • “Public Speaking Sample Assistant” boxes have been added to this edition, examining four sample annotated speeches and three outlines (preparation, template, and delivery) that are designed to illustrate the principles of public speaking and outlining (Chs. 10-13).
  • A new thirteen-chapter format makes this brief text more manageable in the classroom. Material on self and perception has been combined into one chapter (Ch. 2) to enable the course to progress more quickly to and have more time to cover the major forms of communication: interpersonal, small group, and public speaking. Examination of conversation has been combined with that on relationships (Ch. 6), while discussion of conflict now has its own chapter (Ch. 7).
  • New “Media Literacy” boxes in each chapter emphasize the ways in which media influence us and how we can empower ourselves as media consumers. Topics covered include:
    • What is Media Literacy?
    • Who Are the Media?
    • Hate Speech
    • Product Placement
    • Reversing Media’s Influence.
  • Photos throughout the text are now accompanied by a quotation to provide a more open-ended, more creative way of looking at the photos and their relationship to the material. Important ViewPoints questions from the previous edition have been moved to “What do you say?” marginal notes or “Five for Discussion” questions at the end of each chapter.
  • Power and empowerment in human communication, formerly presented in boxes, have been integrated into the text.
  • Revised and expanded coverage of interviewing (emphasizing information and employment interviews) is available in The Interviewing Guidebook that may be bought separately or packaged with new copies of Essentials of Human Communication.
