Description

For courses in Freshman Composition and Argumentative Writing.

More perspectives on argument than any other concise writing guide.  Best-selling argument author Nancy V. Wood offers a concise presentation of how to write persuasively.

This efficient text provides instruction in reading, critical thinking, and writing about argumentative issues in a clear, student-friendly manner. Students will learn to identify topics of personal and social consequence, to read and form reactions and opinions of their own, to analyze a potential audience, and to write argument papers that express their individual view and perspective. Essentials of Argument, 2e, contains ten chapters, each accompanied by class exercises and writing assignments. Research methods are introduced early; students learn to locate, print, and evaluate online materials and avoid plagiarism. Appendices teach MLA and APA styles, summarize major ideas about argument, and provide a list of 100 potential topics for argument papers.

Features

What challenges do students have with writing arguments?

Reading, critical thinking, and writing as an integrative process.  (See end of chapter assignments and questions that invite critical reading, critical thinking, and original argumentative writing, and extensive instruction in critical reading and critical thinking appears throughout)

~Gives students a framework to learn how the reading and writing process can be adapted to argument.

The Rhetorical Situation–Focuses on the audience, the exigence for the argument, the constraints, the author, and the text.

~Allows students to use this information to analyze the arguments they read and to plan the arguments they will write.

The Toulmin Model of Argument, the types of claims based on classical stasis theory, and the classical proofs (logos, ethos, and pathos)–Explained as useful to both the reader and writer of argument.

~Helps students develop material for their papers by introducing heuristics.

Summary charts of important ideas about argument.

~Shows students how these ideas can used by both readers and writers of arguments.

Major writing assignments and Sample Papers by Students-

~Helps students quickly locate frequently visited pages in the text.

Is research part of the course?

Early introduction to research methods.

~Teaches students to locate, read, evaluate, and take notes for both print and online sources.

MLA and APA styles, with sample student papers and questions.

    ~Helps students understand these styles.

What types of assignments do students do as part of the course?

Three types of paper assignments–Includes assignments for: the exploratory argument paper (examines an issue from several perspectives before identifying a favored position); the researched position paper (provides evidence for a point of view on an issue and attempts to persuade an audience to agree with it); and the Rogerian argument paper (searches for points of agreement through the establishment of common ground and seeks to resolve conflict by reaching consensus).  (See end of chapter assignments)

~Provides students with a variety of strategies to draw on as they respond to different rhetorical situations.

    Worksheets and text boxes.

~Provides students with productive strategies for invention and organization; particularly useful information is highlighted in boxes that students can refer to repeatedly.

An optional ongoing writing assignment sequence–Presents an incremental set of assignments, each part of which is labeled with a diamond in the margin

(these extra assignments can stand alone).

~Gives students valuable practice in addition to their regular assignments. Allows instructors flexibility, as they may assign all of it, parts of it, or can skip it altogether.

What problems do students have with plagiarism?

Methods for avoiding plagiarism–Taught throughout the text. Presents the Council of Writing Program Administrators’ definition of plagiarism.

~Shows students clear examples of actual plagiarism so that they know exactly what to avoid and what to do instead.

Are visual analysis and oral arguments important in making arguments?

Visual and Oral Argument assignments–Includes a color portfolio of  ten visual arguments, accompanied by discussion and writing questions.

~Teaches students to analyze the arguments they see and hear every day as well as to create visual and oral arguments of their own.
